Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I went to Justin Philipp DMD office in July in sever pain. The office drew up paper work on how I would be making the payments. They stated the amount I would be paying. They then stated I would have to pay the balance due, but if I would like they would see if I qualified for their credit called Care Credit so I gave the approval and the amount the representative at the Dentist office stated would be my balance of $900.00 so I stated to her please take a payment of $200.00 to apply to the amount I owe. I specifically stated that to her. There was no comment made to me that it was only an estimated amount that she had given me and that the balance would not change. I then go visit the Dentist in September to finish up my work and they state to me I owed them $243.00 and I said then what was the amount I authorized on credit, the comment from the receptionist was that you owe that balance also. I made a payment of $100.00 there and stated when I had the money I would come back next month and make another payment well the Dentist office decides to move the balance of $143.00 to the Care Credit Company without notifying me this had been done. This was very dishonest and sneeky of the business to do this to their customers. I then go an confront the Dentist about what was going on he stated to me you need to calm down or get out of my office. I replied to him I am not yelling at you, but it is my money that is involved here and my frustration is you lied to people and do not expect them to be mad. This Dentist was very unprofessional in his speaking terms to a customer that is paying his salary. I deal with angry customers all day long and I would never speak to them in this manner, because they are contacting you for a problem you have created."

Additional Communication Between Claimant and Justin Philipp Dmd Hide
  • Nov 12, 2012, Justin Philipp DMD (responding party) added:
  • Your response of “I just feel ripped off” is confusing as you told us how happy you were with the dentistry you received. As you noted you were in a lot of pain when you arrived and we relieved your pain and fixed the underlining condition.
You were provided a statement with the total cost of your treatment on it before any treatment was started and you signed it. You signed a financial policies statement agreeing that you are responsible for any treatment costs whether you have insurance or not. You choose to use a health care finance company called Care Credit. You completed the paperwork, with a signature, to use Care Credit and authorized us to charge it. As the Explanation of Benefits from your insurance company states you were responsible for a portion of that total. You paid exactly what the explanation of benefits from your insurance company said you should. No more. You are correct that you used a combination of credit cards and Care Credit to pay your bill. You do not owe anything to the office.
From your behavior in the office it is clear you were upset about something. As many doctors’ offices do; we file claims with a patient’s insurance company as a courtesy to our patients. We offer an estimate of the insurance payment based on the information you provide us and the information we receive from the insurance company. However, no doctor can guarantee payment from an insurance company and you are ultimately responsible for your bill. If you feel the insurance company has underpaid the claim then you can file a dispute with the insurance company. If they agree they will send you a check. We are not Care Credit and have no partnership or control over their practices. You can not make payments to Care Credit at this office or any doctor’s office; it is a separate company. They operate similar to a credit card company. If you have an issue with them you must discuss it with Care Credit.
As you have listed “nothing” as a resolution we have provided the clarification you would not allow us to provide when you were in the office. You were yelling at multiple staff members and the doctor. You were asked to speak in a respectful manor to the doctor and the staff members and in turn we would speak to you in a respectful manor. If you chose not to do so you would be asked to leave. You chose to continue yelling and then left the office without allowing us any opportunity to respond. We are sorry you feel confused over this. We hope this explanation of policies helps.
