I'm sorry that you're going through this. It's hard enough to be an independent contractor - I assume a photographer, given the 'retouching' comment? - without having to do battle to get payment.
In my experience, some companies will mess contractors around because they know that it's too expensive to take them to court or hire a collection agency. Yours Truly Media owes you a measly $200 and they can't pay it? Really? Are their customers paying them on a net 45? That seems extremely unlikely to me.
What Yours Truly Media may not realize is that there is a growing understanding of, and sympathy for, working conditions. If I were looking for a wedding photographer/videographer, for instance, I would not choose a company known for stiffing its photographers, because a) I don't like dishonesty, and b) an unhappy photographer insecure about income is less likely to do a good job. I may be old, but even I've heard of ESG, and I appreciate its goals.
As a customer, I'd also worry about a company suddenly closing its doors and leaving me in the hole for my deposit and without a photographer for an important day.
It's completely possible that Yours Truly Media is simply temporarily financially embarrassed as a very young business with significant start-up expenses; I'm not familiar with the company so I have no idea.
All I do know is that when I search Yours Truly Media, a lot of payment complaints come up. So as a contractor I'd steer clear of them, and I'd do the same as a customer.
I would strongly suggest that they find a way to pay off all their sub-contractors, apologize profusely, and ask if the sub-contractors can take down their complaints so that the company can move forward with a more healthy payment turnaround.
In this specific case, I'd suggest that a fair resolution would include payment in full, a reasonable late fee, and any expenses. I'd also suggest that the claimant ensure that any future contracts include a payment schedule plus late fee amount and due date.
