Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I did an online search for a UK grocery item. Up popped the English Tea Store's website. I put the item in the online shopping bag, browsed around and added another item. I decided to finish my order later. I did NOT at any time enter either my name or email address.

To my utter shock, up popped an email from the English Tea Store in my personal email account. "X (my name) - forget something decadent?"

The email showed the items I'd put in my basket and creepily remarked "Looks like you left something nice behind! Come back and check out our extensive tea, candy, and British food products!"

I want to know where you got my personal information from.

I am absolutely LIVID. It is bad enough when a site you've previously purchased from tracks you like that. It is horrifying when a site you've never been to before harvests your name, email address, and who knows what else from who knows where else and uses it to stalk you online.

I reviewed English Tea Store's privacy policy and here is the relevant part:

“PRIVACY POLICY

The information we collect:

We collect information from you when you register on our site, place an order, subscribe to our newsletter, respond to a survey or fill out a form.

When ordering or registering on our site, as appropriate, you may be asked to enter the following: name, e-mail address, mailing address, phone number or credit card information. You may, however, visit our site anonymously.”

No, I could NOT visit the site anonymously. I did NOT register on the English Tea Store's site, place an order, subscribe to its newsletter, respond to a survey, or fill out a form.

I am deeply offended by these intrusive practices and want to know exactly HOW you collected my information.

Additional Communication Between Claimant and English Tea Store - Online Stores Hide
  • Apr 04, 2017, Claiming party added:
  • I have no idea why English Tea Store accepted my terms without actually fulfilling them but I am reopening this claim pending real settlement. Good grief.

  • Apr 22, 2017, Claiming party added:
  • I am absolutely livid that English Tea Stores has not responded to me. They have violated their own Terms of Service and won't explain how or why. The stalker emails came from Criteo, so I don't know whether they're the culprits with the database. Possibly my kids' generation is comfortable with this level of online intrusion, but I'm not. English Tea Shops should go stalk Trump - according to his dismantling of FCC rules he's happy as a claim about being stalked.

English Tea Store (ETS) should apologize and ALSO explain how their process failed. S.T.'s proposed remedies are fair and should be fulfilled by ETS, but if this was not an intentional action by ETS it should help S.T. understand how it happened. More...

  • I don't know whether this company has broken the law, but they have certainly not abided by their own privacy policy.

If the company says you can shop anonymously and you couldn't, then they certainly have some 'splaining to do.

  • I am curious about this - the response from English Tea Store says that they disclosed where they got your info from. did they? Have you talked to online privacy protection groups?

I hate online stalking too. I suggest you get a VPN.
