Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"My daughter went to receive service from this office. During the initial consult, they reviewed our insurance to determine how much we would have to pay out of pocket. I'm military vet who served my country for over 20 years so the next comment I heard from the dentist office was appalling. The statement of the military insurance is horrible and it is easy for their insurance company to take advantage of a military member is extremely easy. When I ask for clarification, she quickly changed her statement to the military has horrible insurance. Either statement is truly unprofessional, and their personal opinions should be kept to themselves. Regardless, they gave us a quote that stated we would only have to pay out of pocket $100.00. We went ahead and had the procedure done. A month later I received a notice that in addition to the $100.00 I would now have to pay $500.00 I called the office and asked about the bill. I was told, they made a mistake, assumed that I had insurance with a different provider and even though it their fault, I had to pay. Of course, I'm frustrated as I don't have this money, and the response was if the military paid more you wouldn't have this problem. I've filed a complaint on this company with the military on how they are going out of their way to take advantage of us who have served."

  • I am willing to negotiate the price, but am requesting an apology for being mis-treated. Why this office believes they can discriminate against the military & those of color is beyond me. And to have them scream at you like your a child is totally unprofessional.

  • May 16, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • I have tried to resolve this claim, but you seem unwilling. I simply ask for an apology for the way we have been talked down to as a member of the military and as an African American. For your company to believe they can treat people any way they want is truly disturbing. A lot of your business is from military people like myself. And for you to say negative comments about our insurance, talk to us like we're illiterate is not professional. I'm not trying to tell you how to conduct your business, but when we are fighting for your freedom we don't expect to be talked to in such a way. So, yes a simple apology and a compromise in the final payment due is requested.

  • May 16, 2016, Curtis Hayslip, DDS (responding party) added:
  • These accusations against this practice are false. We have not mis-treated nor show prejudice in any way. This is a open and shut matter of service was rendered and monies are owed.

  • May 17, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • Just another example of your company refusing to compromise or work with the military.

  • May 19, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • We just now received your threat of sending the bill to a collection agency. Great way to threaten a disable child/patient. Again, instead of willing to compromise you results to bullying. This company just continues to demonstrate how low they will go.

    "Mr. Miles,
May I first politely correct you that the services in question were provided by Dr. Michael Billingsley DDS not by Dr. Curtis Hayslip DMD. As explained to you before, the estimate given for your daughters oral surgery was based on having coverage from 2 insurance policies. Although most people assume it is OUR responsibility to inform you as the patient about insurance coverage it is in fact YOUR responsibility to know the limits of your coverage.

At no time during the estimate process did your daughter or any adult that accompanied her inform us that she was not covered by two plans. In fact her registration form states simply she is covered by your insurance. Your record with our office has two insurance policys. Therefore her record pulls in your insurance coverage. And her estimate was prepared as such. As a new patient your daughter signed a financial agreement that states "Regarding Insurance-We accept multiple insurance benefit plans and we will file all claims as a courtesy for your primary dental insurance and your secondary dental insurance. If your insurance plan does not pay for the estimated amount, you the patient will be responsible for the difference. Please be aware that some, and perhaps all, of the services provided may be non-covered services and not considered reasonable and necessary under your dental insurance plan. It will be your responsibility to know your insurance coverage policy. We will do our best to help you obtain any information needed. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance company; we are not a party to that contract. "

An estimate was prepared for her before surgery, and is just that, an estimate we can not guarantee what insurance will pay for services. We discounted her services $586.00 for our agreed Delta Dental PDP fee and we waived her consultation fee of $105.00 that is a total of $691.00 in discounts. That is 33% off our usual fees for these services. And this was all prior to you filing this complaint. We can do nothing further to discount these services.
