Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"Earlier this year, in July, I was a patient in the Lucerne Rehab Center for Spine and Orhopedic injuries. The head of the dept. that deals with Medicare got an approval for a specialized power wheelchair that was custom made for me. For some reason, when the Scooter Store billed Medicare, Medicare denied the claim. I was told it was because the paperwork had not been filled out properly to show need for the specialized chair. Recently I contacted the Scooter Store and spoke to Jose Almonte to order a part for my chair that had broken and he told me that the chair had no warranty since Medicare denied the claim. Yesterday I found out that indeed there is a manufacturer's warranty because I have had the chair less than a year and he flat out lied to me because he was angry that Medicare denied the claim. Not only did he lie about the warranty, but he did nothing to help me out when I had such a need. I cannot walk and am totally dependent on the chair."

  • I would personally talk to the head of department at Lucerne Rehab Center and let him or her know about the problems you are having. Seemingly the issue here is that the paperwork was not filled out right by the Rehab center head. Yes he may have gotten an approval but there is more to the approval for the company to get paid. Maybe they can talk to the Scooter store in efforts to help them get paid. Also mention that because there was non-payment that it is affecting your warranty which is not being honored. They have to be as specific as possible in reason for need so no problems will arise for payment. Also located on the medicare billing there are letter codes given right next to the item that is being billed. On the last page of billing explanation or giving for the letter codes. This can help you know exactly where the problem is steeming from. Hope this helps with your frustration.

  • In addition to working with Medicare to help solve this issue, you should also contact the store again. Perhaps writing a letter, indicating that you have become aware that there is a warranty for your chair and that repairs should be covered. Also let them know that you are currently working on resolving the Medicare issue so that they can get paid. By letting the store know that you are willing to work with them by helping them to get paid, they can help you out by repairing your chair that is covered by a warranty. Things can get complicated when there are many parties involved, and by letting the store know you are working with him/her, they may be able to help you quicker.

  • This is what you need to do. I'm not for sure if you have regular medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan. If it's orignial medicare. You have to contact your doctor to complete the proper paperwork for medicare to pay your claim. In order to be approve for your scooter and medicare to pay for it. Your Medical doctor must sign off on it. Your Doctor can guide you as well as the scooter store. Also long as your Doctor shows that you have a need for the scooter Medicare will pay the claim. You may then work with the scooter store to make any repairs needed for the chair. If you have a Medicare advantage plan contact your plan and they will assist you and guide you through the process. Since you say you are disabled the process can happen pretty smoothly if you follow the guideline set by medicare.
