Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"Attempted to meet with News Director, Tim Mello, regarding a crime story about a school patrol organization that was over the top in stereotypical depictions, discriminatory images & undertone reporting comments that reflected badly on the Black community and personalities. The story was just done in bad racial taste, with no concern how it portrayed the individuals in the story or impacted the Black people in Erie, PA. Pam Forsyth, General Manager was called into a meeting on the story and immediately dismissed my complaint, out of hand, with no remedial action on the part of the station to address the concerns on the built-in racial biases in the story.

The station, via Pam Forsyth, has discontinued or shut down communication with me, over this charge of racial discrimination, based on how they portrayed on the air in the story on the Blue Coats. I've placed several calls and sent several emails, trying to meet, to find out the station intentions on this complaint, with got no response from Pam Forsyth, Genera Manager on this issue."

  • Dec 23, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • A official notification was made to file a complaint against Adam Snow, News Assignment Editor, but no action by the station has been forthcoming or set in motion to correct the action. There has been no action or acknowledgement of my complaint.

  • Dec 30, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • The station has yet to develop a strategy or plan to hire more air time minorities at the station. It has a poor history of hiring minorities at the station, in most any capacity. The station allows few hours of air programming for minority stories, or community reporting on minority youth sports events and school events.

  • Dec 30, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • Ms. Forsyth, General Manager, please recognize that the Blue Coat story, in question, is indicative of much of the air time devoted to minority exposure on the air is poorly represented, and often present the Black experience in basically, the accepted version of all the stereotypical images and portrayals, criminals, drug dealers, etc. Our contact to the station about the Blue Coat story was as a friendly agent of change, to advise and assist the station in this area where you've been shown to be deficient and negligent. By your actions, and response, it is apparent your indecisiveness and inexperience in this area/medium could use some professional assistance from an outside advisor and different point of view from a minority perspective.

  • Feb 06, 2017, Claiming party added:
  • Mailed a letter to NBC Universal, New York, NY explaining the fact that Pam Forsyth, General Manager, rejects to meet to resolve this rather, essentially consequential situation, that can easily be handled via a meeting.

  • Feb 06, 2017, Claiming party added:
  • Letter to NBC Universal, NY, NY Letter to Atty. C.A. Markham was in response to the letter Pam Forsyth had him send to me. Plz review?
