Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"12/20/2021 I attended Duke Eye Clinic located in Durham, NC. I have been going here for months getting shots in my eyes. On 12/20/2021
my eye doctor said that they have a new medication that will be given to me, and that I will be the first patient to receive this medicne give by a
member of his team, a Dr. Mann. Upon getting the medicine, your eye must be numb, which I have always received the gel. I did not reliaze
that the person numbing your eye has only been there a couple of months, and does not know if the patient eye is numb or not. After about 20 minutes
Dr. Mann came in end started putting the needle in my eye in a location that my eye was not numb. When I complained about how much it hurt, she
just said a little bit more. After she pulled the needle out I thought I was going to pass out from the pain, she left the room and the pain was severe to
the point the other lady started fanning me, took my eye pressure which shot to 85, saw that I was in distress, ran out and got my doctor, who ran
into the room and kept saying he was sorry and kept apologizing, then stuck another needle to relieve the pain, now at this time my eye is worse,
painful, and unable to see anything, at least before this happen I could see a little."

  • I have fied a claimed against Duke Eye Center on their procedure in giving a shot in yours eyes and against a trainee who gave the shot. Duke responded by saying the pain that I went thru with my eye pressure jumping to "85" and me almost passing out with the person who applied the numbing gel to my eye was well trained and their only about 5 weeks who came from Amazan, and when I told her her I could hardly breathe, she started fanning me with an envelop, and the trainee dr, w was placed, and yelling that it hurts, and just continued given me the shot in a position other than where the numbing gel was placed, kept saying just a little bit more. I thought My eye was going to explode, and also me having a stroke or heart attack.

I wonder how many patients have experience something like I went thru. Duke Eye does not care that alot of their patients are older, and I'm quite sure some with underline medical conditions. They don't even check to see if your eye is numb, or better yet ask you, they also don't check anyone blood pressure. They gave me a steriod, which they told me later that it must be monitored.

Their answer to me is a pinch and pressure, and that a token we will adjust your bill. This was a botched procedure that was given by people who was not fully qualified to carry this out. Please see Duke Eye Center Response.. Letter attached

Grace Gery (Comment):
"My husband had a similar experience with his shot. Another MD was asked to do his shot, and it was fine. When we asked the next time if we could request the doctor who didn't hurt him we were advised that we would then be labeled as problem patients by Duke. When we spoke with Attending at next visit, his reply was that he was the ONLY person in that clinic that could label anyone as a problem. We found a Doctor locally that is administering shots every 4 to 6 weeks with a different protocol for numbing. We will continue to use the Attending at his new office twice a year
There seems to be a distinct lack of empathy for people getting needles stuck in their eyes, and it seems to come from people higher up on the food chain who think they know more than patients and providers. Sad to say Duke is too busy being politically correct, as opposed to patients are number one"

Awaiting response from Duke...

"Duke did not come forth and address the situation laid before them, that they had a doctor in training given the shot to my EYE, and when she was told that it hurts, she just continue administered the shot saying just a little bit more, then left the room and left me sitting there with an employee that's not trained in this, with me going into diress saying I could not breath and my heart racing and she finally running out the room to seek help, and the best big old duke did was saying they are sorry, and. made a minor adjustment on my bill.

If I was any one that could step to old big duke and challenge them in. court, I would have...and big old. Duke knows this, that's why they will get away with this and continue to do so."

I would suggest that Duke Eye Centre provide additional training for their trainees and ensure that the claiming party only has appointments with the main doctor going forward.
