Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I paid $4,000 for a remanufactured engine. I have not received money for the core that was shipped to you over 4 months ago. What is basically a 2-3 day job turned out to be 5 weeks. After the 5 week wait the engine still wasn't right. The two people that built this motor did a very poor job. During this 5 week wait I lost employment for two weeks because I did not have a vehicle. I lost out on $2560 in wages. I also paid for a car rental and hotel fees. The car rental fees for both occasions totaled $940.19. The hotel fees totaled $512.52. I paid all of this extra money because of this poor work and I want it paid back to me.

Update/additional info:

To Whom It May Concern:
This is the entire history of this complaint. I ordered an engine for my Subaru on 10/26/15 and the cost was $3,985. I paid with a cashiers check. The charge for the check was $10.00 and the receipt for delivery was $5.00. The total is now $4,000.00. I called Colorado Component Rebuilders’ Inc. (CCR) and was informed that it would be three weeks to get the engine because they were shorthanded. CCR used a portion of the $3,985 to ship the engine to my mechanic using USF Reddaway as the shipper. CCR handled this part of the business transaction.
Three weeks later the engine was shipped to the wrong address. I checked on line with the tracking number provided by CCR. The engine was in the shippers warehouse on the north side of Las Vegas, NV. I called the shipper and they made two deliver attempts and that an extra charge would be applied. I had to call the shipper three times to get my engine delivered to the correct address. These calls were made on 11/20/15. The first delivery attempt was made on 11/18/15. Because it was later in the afternoon on Friday 11/20/15 no one of authority at the shipping company could help me with this problem. No one was available at CCR because they close early on Fridays and do not work weekends. I had to wait until Monday to solve the problem I did not create.
I called CCR on Monday 11/23/15 and Sarah Arndt resolved this problem. According to Keith Pearce, my mechanic, the person at CCR gave the shippers the wrong address. This person was fired from CCR because this was not the first time this has happened.
The engine was delivered on Monday 11/23/15 and my mechanic could not start his work until Tuesday.
Taking an engine out and then replacing it is a two to three day job.
I paid for a hotel room nearby for three days. I live 54 miles from my mechanic in the town of Sandy Valley, NV. The population is just over 2,000 people and there are no services here. Only a post office, restaurant, general store, and a tavern, nothing else.
The job was started on Tuesday 11/24/15. On Wednesday an hour and a half before my mechanic closes for the day, he called me with bad news. The remanufactured engine was backfiring and would not run properly. This engine had to be partially taken apart to be diagnosed. There wasn’t enough time in the day to do all of this extra work. The next day was Thursday, Thanksgiving day. My mechanic does not work on this day. I had to wait another day and my three-day stay at the hotel was complete and there were no vacancies on this holiday. I had to find another hotel. I have no vehicle. I did find a hotel for the next two days. The cost was $333.76. My total expenditure for hotel rooms is $569.98. I did not include the $236.22 for the first three days in the complaint because I knew I had to do this anyway. The extra $333.76 is an extra expense because of CCR’s poor quality and included in the complaint.
On Friday 11/27/15 I walked to my mechanics place of business, I have no vehicle. The problem with the new engine was a bent cam pulley installed by CCR. The cam pulley was so bent that it made physical contact with the cam sensor. This is what caused the engine to backfire and not run properly. My mechanic removed the cam pulley from my factory engine and installed it on the new CCR engine. I was present when the engine was started with the good cam pulley. The engine started right up and seemed to run well. It was run for approximately two minutes and then shut off. The vehicle was raised to inspect underneath for no leaks. After several minutes both head gaskets were leaking coolant. They were leaking from the top and bottom of both head gaskets. This engine is now unusable.
Now I am angry, beyond angry. Keith Pearce then had his son, Chris drive me to my hotel room. I am furious with no vehicle.
Early in the afternoon on the same day Keith called me at the hotel with two options, rent a car or he would give me a ride home. I chose the ride home because I have already paid too much money for this engine.
The new engine had to be taken out and returned to Colorado. Keith did not want to do this work because he did not want to adversely affect the warranty provided by CCR. I agreed with this decision.
Lorrie Pearce, Keith’s wife, gave me a ride home. Now I have no vehicle for my job. I am a sub contractor who installs, removes, and remodels commercial kitchens. I report to job sites with my five toolboxes. I do not report to an office of fabrication shop. I called my employer, Danny Munoz, and explained my situation to him and to please not fire me. Danny is very understanding and did not fire me. I have to have a vehicle, no vehicle, and no job.
The week beginning 11/29/15 Keith removed the new engine and shipped it back to Colorado along with the old engine. These engines were received by CCR on 12/9/15. I am supposed to receive $350.00 from CCR by means of a check. I am still waiting for this check and today is 5/1/16. According to Sarah Arndt this is a common complaint from many other customers.
Keith was informed by Emily Johnston, co-owner of CCR, that he would be paid by CCR for this warranty work. Keith charges $1,071.00 for this work and CCR charges $1,200.00. Keith was paid just under $700 by CCR for this work. Now everyone on this end of this job is angry. All of this is because of the two incompetent employees at CCR. Extremely poor quality and this is all they do at CCR, rebuild Subaru engines.
For the next two weeks I had no vehicle. My employer had to hire someone else to replace me. I lost out on $2,560.00 of income. This amount is included in my claim. At the end of these two weeks my employer picked me up to take me budget car rental. I needed this rental for three weeks. The cost was $571.00 and it is included in my claim.
The engine was sent back and reinstalled on 12/24/15. A two to three day job turned out to be a five- week nightmare. Two days later I started the engine and there was a serious knock. I have owned a Subaru exclusively since 1999 and I knew there was a problem. Every time the engine was started when the engine was cold this knock was present. This new engine used more oil and was getting less miles per gallon than my old engine that had 194,700 miles on it. Every time was cold started oil came out of the tail pipe. A video was sent to CCR to prove this. During this time I change to oil twice using the recommended oil and oil filter in accordance with the warranty. Gold colored metal was present in both oil changes. Gold colored metal is from the main bearings. This should never occur in any engine. Now I have an engine with serious internal damage. Keith Pearce talked to the two people who built this engine and one of them said they were distracted. What does this mean? This is all they do, rebuild Subaru engines.
I called CCR and talked to Sarah. I told that I had enough and I wanted all of my money back. CCR cannot build a good reliable engine and can never trust there work. This is too much. I also stated that I would take my business to the dealership at least they would get it right the first time.
In the middle of January Emily Johnston left a message and stated that they would build a new engine. Everything but the heads. CCR wanted to use the heads that were on this bad engine.
My mechanic took the engine out again and sent it back to Colorado. I had to rent another car for two weeks. This cost was $369.19 and is included in my complaint. During this time my employer wanted to send me to Orlando Florida to install a new job. I could not do so because of this engine.
This second engine was installed and completed on 2/5/16. This engine has performed much better.
On Thursday 4/28/16 I sent an e-mail to Emily stating that this second engine has begun seeping oil from the head gasket on the drivers side. Oil seeping from a head gasket is common with engines that have over 100,000 miles on them. This second has 3780 miles on it. Today is 5/1/16 and she hasn’t responded to my message. On CCR’s website one of their selling points are the improved head gaskets. See it for yourselves, check it out.
What I want now is this engine taken out and replaced with a genuine Subaru engine provided by Subaru and installed by a Subaru mechanic. I will not pay for any of this because I already have twice over.
All I wanted and paid for is an engine that is right the first time. This is the desire of every customer.

This is my nightmare. Please help, advise.

  • If you never received one, then the shop never gave it to you. The complete warranty paperwork ships with the engine.
I shall have our secretary send one out to you today. Please fill in the mileage at the time of installation in the appropriate spot, then sign and return the statement of receipt (NOT the warranty itself) in the SASE.

Message from Colorado Component Rebuilders,Inc: Apparently, Mr. Sterle has not actually read his warranty, even though he returned a form saying he did.
Quote: " The obligation of this Warranty shall be limited solely to repairing or replacing the product, or any defective part thereof, after Company inspection, either at our factory of by on-site inspection by an authorized independent third party. In no event shall the company be liable for any consequential, indirect, incidental or special damages of any nature arising from the sale of the engine, including but not limited to rental car charges, any tow charges, labor not done by CCR, Inc. or any failure of accessory parts such as hoses or gaskets which are not part of the engine, unless pre-authorized by CCR, Inc. CCR, Inc. shall not be responsible for lost profits, sales or income, storage fees, substitute transportation, lodging, unauthorized repairs. Authorized licensed repairs will be compensated at no more than Standard Mitchell Book time and at a flat rate of no more than $60 per hour. "
We have already paid 2 labor invoices, plus shipping charges and repaired the engine. If it is not operating properly at this time, we have not been informed.
As to the car rental charges, I authorized a max of $15/day for an unspecified amount of time, but never received any invoice for that.
It is not our fault that Mr. Sterle lives about 60 miles from the shop he chose. And if he had a rental car, why did he not go to work? There are many people in that area (as well as here in CO) who commute that distance daily.
If Mr. Sterle will email or fax a copy of his car rental receipt to us (as he should have months ago), I will respond.
The core charge amount he is claiming is incorrect. He was charged $350, NOT $500. I thought it had been paid, but upon checking, I see it was not. I am sending a check for that out no later than Monday 4/11/16.
