Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"After 20 trips to the ER in two months to Tennova, this hospital has attempted to double bill us for our visits on numerous occasions. We have since left Tennova and have used the ER services of Park West, UT Medical Center and Fort Saunders. No other hospital in Knoxville from this list has ever attempted to double bill us. We have always paid our bill at the time of dismissal from the hospital and after we get home we get another bill to be paid from them. They work off of computers and how is it that Tennova has made this mistake on many occasions. My wife was admitted into the hospital for 5 days last October and on the 3rd day they called her room and demanded $500 to be paid immediately. We did that and after her dismissal we of course got a bill of $500 to be paid and we had to prove to them that we had paid it. My question is how many patients don't realize they have been double billed and just pay over again. This appears to be a scam to get extra income for Tennova."

  • Mar 26, 2013, Claiming party added:
  • The 5 days stay in the hospital was in September, my wife was admitted into the hospital on September 17 and they requested payment while in her room of $500 which we paid immediately on September 18, 2012. After dismissal and arriving home we received another billing for the same $500. This bill was dated October 15, 2012. My wife Julie Martin was in and out of emergency during the month of September 2012 and we paid our co-pay every time at the time of dismissal and every time we received another billing after coming home. This double billing practice is only consistent with Tennova and since Tennova we have used UT medical center, Fort Sander’s and Park West and none have attempted to double bill us.

  • Mar 26, 2013, Claiming party added:
  • Our desire is not to recover any damages but to alert the public of Tennova’s double billing practices. How many people receive another bill and un-wittingly pay it? How much money do they make from the un-scrupulous practice?

  • Tennova has repeatedly dealt with us dishonestly, making arrangements and then going back on the agreements. They demanded we fill out and sign a credit application on a small $175 bill, after we and our insurance paid them thousands for heart surgery. When we would not, they accessed my credit files and score without my permission. Then even after payments on that as agreed, turned it into collection. Same for another surgery, then prevented me from having and echocardiogram by claiming I owed a large deposit, which I did not. Insurance would have paid it at 100%. On and on. Wish my cardiologist was elsewhere. Not to mention they throw you out in the parking lot when your procedure or surgery is over, and they are hurting people because of it. Our friend bled so much after they sent him home too soon, his heart stopped. The place needs turned upside down by the TN Attorney General. That isn't even half of what they have done to us.

  • Have you attempted to speak with someone in the billing department, perhaps a manager or supervisor? The billing system for Tennova may work differently than other hospitals you have used and may account for the double billing. Perhaps they are not checking their records for payment before sending out a bill. It is a good thing you are diligent in checking your statements as you seemed to have avoided this double billing issue. Unless you have spoken with someone regarding their billing practices, I would be careful to jump to conclusions regarding a scam. Hospitals are highly regulated and if they were attempting to knowingly double bill patients, they risk losing funding that they rely on for Medicare/Medicaid patients as well as facing fines and a loss of patient confidence. I am not saying there may not be something suspect, I am simply suggesting that you do some more investigation before accusing them of misconduct.
