Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"We are a military family and we moved from Lillington, NC to Marriottsille, MD on 08/2011. We had to live with my parents for approximately one year while we sold our old home and purchased new home. During the time period between 09/2011 and 08/15/2012 approximately 1/2 of our household goods were stored at Park Moving and Storage in Aberdeen, MD. On 08/15/2012 the items were delivered to my home in Marriottsville, MD. The moving company unpacked all our items per request through the military. At this time, we discovered several large items broken or damaged in the move or in storage. I filled out the appropriate paper work with the employees at the time of the move and the additional paperwork with the company. There was approximately $1500 damage to our household goods. I received a check from Park MOving and Storage for $40. I was told that they will only reimburse 30 cents per pound for items broken or damaged and that here is a standard scale to use when approximating weight. I asked the company to send me any documents that my husband or I signed agreeing to this. I was sent a document that was unsigned and when I questioned the company, I was told that the document did not need to be signed. This company has been extremely difficult and unprofessional. I cannot believe that this is how our military families are treated when they are faced with a difficult move. I am hoping to reconcile this claim with a monetary amount that is closer to the amount needed to replace or fix these items. After all that my family has sacrificed the last ten years for this country, I am disgused with this treatment and I hope that other military families moving to the MD area do not have to be treated as we were."

  • Did your mover provide you with a copy of a booklet called “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” (printed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration)? This booklet, which is required to be provided to you prior to the move, details the types of liability that movers are required to have. According to the website provided by the FMCSA, unless you opt into the lesser coverage, known as released value liability, the carrier transports your belongings at full protection liability. You should look back at your documents in regards to documents and invoices from the moving company, and also this document they are claiming you didn’t have to sign. It is also of concern that they told you they would only cover up to 30 cents a pound for damages, when even the released value liability covers 60 cents a pound (the value plan).
