Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I feel the policy of the business is unfair

Hello Dr. Maday,
This is xxx (name deleted for privacy but available to Midland), your former patient. I writing this letter to inform you of the way I was recently treated by the staff at your office. My future actions or this letter is by no means, any reflection on you. I think you are a good doctor.
On my last appointment with you, I was forced to leave a credit card on file and pay my past due bill before I was allowed to see you.
I have been trying to get an appointment with you for the past 2 weeks. I recently did something to right knee and I have been in pain for 2 weeks. I could haven went some where else, but I wanted to see you.
I contacted your office, on Monday, I was told there was an appointment available for Wed. today. However, I was also told that I needed the have a zero balance before the appointment could be scheduled. I called the collection agency the same day paid the 184.00 bill. I was told before that a payment plan wasn’t an option. I didn’t really have the money being on a fixed income, but that’s how bad I wanted to see you. I immediately contacted Midland, to let them know I paid the money and to schedule me for an appointment. I realize my bill was past due, but I know my insurance company Blue Cross ppo has paid thousands to Midland over the years.
Long story short on yesterday about 4pm I get a call from Midland stating that they had verified the payment, and that I had a zero balance. I was then told by Ty, the date and time for today was still open, however I would have to bring in 200.00 cash before I could see you. My deductible with BlueCross has been met, with my policy, they pay 90% and I pay 10%. Why should I have to pay upfront to see you.
I contacted BlueCross to inform them of the new policy of Midland and they didn’t understand it either. Cassie H from your office was contacted by a representative of BlueCross. I plan to make a formal complaint.
I will be seeking a new orthopedist, I will really miss you Dr. Maday. The last injections you gave me lasted almost 2 years. I was hoping we could have worked out something, because I’m leaving town on Friday May 20. I didn’t want to continue to take pain medicine.
I hope your office staff understands that I was very hurt on yesterday, the way I was talked to and treated. You have been my doctor for a very long time, now I have to start over.
I wish you much success and happiness.
P.S. It’s not what Midland did, it’s how they did it.

Sincerely,
xxx (name deleted for privacy but available to Midland)

  • Is $200 your co-pay or the entire bill for the office visit?

If you have insurance, and Midland Orthopedic Associates takes it, then they'd be within their rights to ask for the co-pay up front but I don't see the necessity for paying for the entire office visit. Unless your doc charges $2,000 per visit (!!) it seems as if they want the whole lot upfront, which seems pretty unreasonable.

Did BCBS slow-pay the last bill? Or could Midland not verify your insurance? It doesn't sound like it because you say that BCBS contacted Midland. What did BCBS report back to you about that call?

Why did you have $184 owing? Unfortunately, if your last bill went unpaid, with no effort to make arrangements to pay, then I can understand why they might not be too trusting. Trying to collect on unpaid bills adds a lot to admin costs.

I hope this is worked out. It is a shame that the availability of good care is complicated by a constant tug of war over costs.
