Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I have had to replace the fuel pump in my 2002 Yukon XL twice now, at a cost of around $900 per repair! Each time the part failed, the vehicle died without warning. The first time was on a busy boulevard with my wife driving and my kids in the car. It was on a very dangerous and high speed curve, at night. The most recent incident was about a week ago when my son and his girlfriend were driving on the freeway at around 5:00 in the afternoon. The sheer panic in his voice terrified me when he called to tell me what was happening. I thought at any moment I would hear screeching tires and the sound of him being hit from behind as I listened to him explaining what happened and where he was. Thankfully, after 10 to 15 minutes of being stranded in the middle of the freeway a tow truck happened by and turned his flashing lights on behind him to direct traffic around until he was able to tow him off of the freeway.

The ABS Control Module also has failed twice on this vehicle, right around the same time as the fuel pump, at a repair cost of around $2,000 each occurrence. Since both of these items are safety related and critical to the operation of the vehicle and both have failed twice, I felt that GM must certainly have a recall or service bulletin on them so I proceeded to contact GM for assistance. They informed me they did not have a recall or service bulletin on either of these systems and that I would have to incur the full cost myself. I typically don't have a problem paying for regular maintenance items that fail over time, as I did when the first fuel pump failed (thankfully I had an extended warranty that was still in effect at the time and it paid for much of that repair). I also paid the $2,000+ cost for both of the ABS Control Module failures. But when this latest incident occurred with the fuel pump yet again, I was infuriated, mostly because of how it endangered my son and all the other drivers around him and that GM would not have improved the design of this part to prevent continued failure. How is it that this part can regularly fail at around 70,000 miles and not give any warning but yet not be a service bulletin or recall part? It doesn't make any sense to me that such a dangerous flawed design continues to be used for these parts. I also own a GM Saturn Vue with more miles on it than my Yukon, although it is one year newer, and have NEVER replaced a fuel pump! Does that not sound as though there is a problem with the Yukon parts??? I have also owned other GM and other manufacturer's vehicles that I have never had to replace a fuel pump on, much less two fuel pumps and two ABS Control Modules!

Where is the empathy and good customer service anymore? I didn't think that it was too much to ask that they cover or help cover the cost of this latest fuel pump repair but the extent of their empathy was that they were sorry but they couldn't assist me. It's a real shame that they just don't care. I will not be buying another GM vehicle, ever!"
