Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I had a credit line of over 700 dollars with Bill Me Later and had made my first purchase during the 2011 holiday season. The purchase was for approximately 250 dollars and I paid everything on time in one payment within the 6 month time frame. A little more than a year later I bought two used pairs of jeans for a total of 40 dollars. My first experience with this company was good so I had no reservations about making a second purchase. But the due date on this second purchase was changed from 6 months to 30 days. I was not informed about this change in payment deadlines until I received a piece of mail with a late fee as well as an adjusted balance to include an exorbitant interest rate. The purchase of 40 dollars ended up costing over 100. In any case I made sure to be very careful if using the company again. Within the past week I went to make a purchase online for a family member's birthday and planned to buy part of the gifts with bill me later. I went to finish checking out and found my bill me later account had vanished. I called the company and they said they'd send the request in to have the account reopened (which I assumed would be fine since I had made an initial large payment of several hundred dollars on time and was only late with a small 40 dollar payment due to an honest mistake) but a day later I got a cryptic email explaining "changes, if any, to your account will be made in 24 to 48 hours. To find out what happened I called customer service and they told me that my account was not reopened and no further explanation was given. This company employs practices very similar to Bank of America - in this instance, they trick the customer into opening an account with an appealing 6 month time frame to make payment. This appears to be the company's selling point as it is featured prominently all over their advertising in huge type. Then after a positive initial experience they hope the customer will trust that future purchases will be similar, and only then due they change the due date - from 6 months to 30 days or less. Then each additional month they increase the interest rate. You can find yourself suddenly getting a surprise in the mail while all the while you had planned in good faith to make payment on the assumed time. And furthermore, they don't accept payment by credit card or paypal. Only by check or money order through the mail will they accept payment. So a slow postal system can lead to many unwanted charges. I believe this company is dishonest and should be reported to anyone and everyone who has an interest in looking into disreputable business practices. I had a credit limit of over 700 dollars which was cancelled without warning which although is within their right, their unfair billing practices and payment policies lead me to believe I had a much later deadline. There was no issue in getting the 40 dollar payment in, it was merely a question of not knowing when it was due and I believe their practices are fraudulent and mislead customers easily into making this mistake. Thank you for reading such a long response but I felt that if other people have had this same experience it's important to know that it's not an isolated occurrence."
