Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I accidentally allowed my car insurance to lapse due to not receiving a bill before the renewal. When I contacted Travelers approximately two and a half weeks into my new billing cycle, I was told that there wasn't a problem and they were more than happy to take my credit card payment over the phone. They charged the payment for 3 months, gave me a confirmation code after the payment was transmitted by my credit card company, and they then issued new insurance cards. The also told me that they would send a statement for the next payment due "sometime in December".
Five weeks later we received a refund check in the mail with no explanation on it (my wife assumed it was a refund from our homeowner’s policy that we cancelled after having issues with the adjuster, on THE ONLY CLAIM we ever put in on our home, for a damaged roof. ***Everyone on our street had high wind and hail damage from a severe storm last summer.) My wife deposited the check, which was for a different amount than the premium I had paid earlier for our cars (again, we thought it was from the homeowners policy). In late December we questioned each other about the car insurance and if either of us had seen a statement from Travelers. We became concerned and called Travelers to inquire when it was due again and were told by the representative that we had NO COVERAGE! She put us on hold for several minutes and when she came back on the phone she told us that "it was a computer-error". She apologized and indicated that she talked to her supervisor and we could re-instate it "if we hadn't had any accidents" and that she would record our statement as to this. We told her that we hadn't had any accidents and we were upset that we never received a cancellation notice so that we could take action ourselves. Again, they took a payment over a phone for over $700+ for the remainder of the policy period; we were given another confirmation code, and issued new cards.
In February (6+ weeks later) we received a letter stating that our policy was going to increase in cost and a few days later received ANOTHER refund check with NO EXPLANATION on it and NO CANCELLATION NOTICE. We immediately called Travelers and after going through the same process as the previous time, again we were told that it was a "computer-error" (SECOND TIME???) and that we should "cancel" the refund check and that they would reinstate the policy with no-lapse if we hadn't had any accidents. They again had to record this before we could "re-instate". We then told her that we were going to seek insurance somewhere else and we were told that if we DIDN'T pay the premium, they would show us as having a LAPSE in coverage and it would have adverse effect on our future premiums! We agreed to pay the full amount again through the remainder of the 6 months.
Within the next couple of days we changed insurance companies.
I feel that WE have done everything we could do by paying these premiums IN FULL for a policy of protection and this company used extortion tactics AFTER telling us that we had NO COVERAGE due to THEIR "computer errors" through 90% of this policy. We NEVER received a cancellation notice and again were told that we had no coverage if we had to place a claim. We OBVIOUSLY paid for a policy that was promised but we never received. NO peace of mind and then the added "slap" in the face when they forced us to pay for something so they wouldn't BLACK LIST us with anyone else causing our rates to increase, possibly exponentially!!!"
