"Hello, Guest made the reservation under the Rate Plan: Tiered Advance Purchase Booking (SAPR2B) which is a non-cancelable & non-modifiable under any circumstances. It is clearly explained to guest and accepted by them while making the reservation online or over the phone. You can contact booking.com(888-850-3958) or Choice Hotels (800-300-8800) to re-confirm the rate plan and policy. I apologize for the inconvenience but it is the policy which we have to follow as part of the franchise of Choice hotels. Sincerely,Nancy GandhiGeneral ManagerRodeway Inn Huntington Station."

I travel frequently and use quite a number of booking sites. Sometimes one takes a financial risk. I use Priceline's bidding site frequently, and also sometimes make non-refundable reservations in exchange for lower costs. I really don't have much patience for people who whine about not being able to get a refund after bidding on Priceline - it's all very clear.
However, reading this complaint it's quite clear to me that this is a relatively unworldly person who just wanted to visit a dying friend and is elderly himself. I doubt that he got much of a discount through Rodeway / Choice Hotels itself; hotel chain locked-in prices are not the kind of bargains you get when you bid $30 on a 4* hotel room and win.
I remember making a non-refundable reservation at a fabulous Westin in Mumbai. My flight was cancelled and I freaked out. I called the hotel and they had absolutely no hesitation in telling me that they wouldn't be able to refund my money but they'd certainly apply what I'd paid to a room whenever I could get there.
They were wonderful and won a fan for life (I've stayed there several times since, even at rack rates). In this case I'd say that Rodeway / Choice is being very far from wonderful. I think it would be a great compromise for them to stop being so rigid and issue him a voucher for a night's stay. It's always the exception that proves the rule - and also proves that a big business has a heart.

PeopleClaim is a new way to resolve disputes online without lawyers or mediators. By inviting suggestions from the public, disputing parties get ideas that can lead to settlement – and the person(s) who contributed them can win a reward.
Here's what to do: Read the case (left side of page). Then go to the bottom of the page and enter your suggestion in the space provided. Click the Solution button.
Your suggestion will be sent to both parties and will post on the claim. If the two sides agree to settle based on your suggestion, you're eligible to win.
