Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"My friends Mary Lee Rennolds (age 71) and her son went to KEL Attorneys in Lakeland, FL. Ms. Rennolds lived in her home in excess of 20 years, caring for her mother; the homeowner until she passed at age 92 in February, 2014. There was a reverse mortgage taken out by the homeowner, and the bank was in the process of evicting them from the home.

The home was purchased at auction and offered to the Rennold for $39500. They were trying to get funding to purchase the home and were given an eviction notice. They went to KEL in total desperation to avoid eviction and were advised by KEL that they could assist them in their dire situation. They were charged a $950.00 fee on January 16, 2016. They were forced out of the home on January 26, 2016.

KEL never contacted them after their initial visit, would not return any phone calls, and never acknowledged that they knew the Rennolds' had been evicted. A refund was requested as was an accounting of how the fee had been earned. Their response was that the retainer was theirs even if they did nothing and were not required to explain their efforts on behalf of the Rennolds' unless they had exceeded the retainer fee.

This is not a case of buyers remorse; there are no guarantees that you will win a case if an attorney is retained; but in this case there was no ruling against the Rennolds', there was nothing done PERIOD. Ms. Rennolds has a monthly income of $675.00, and her son has a minimum wage job. They scraped up a deposit of $250.00 and I lent them $700.00 to meet the requirement; but feel scammed and down right a victim of theft.

The attitude of KEL is disgusting, and feeds into the stereotyping of attorneys. The Rennolds' spoke to an attorney for about 10 minutes and had no feedback or evidence of anything done by the law firm. Their Facebook page indicates that this is the norm for this firm. We would like a refund of the fees charged not because the Rennolds' were evicted; but because we are certain nothing had been done in the short time frame of 20 days from hire to eviction."

  • My next action will be to alert the Bar Association, and the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, as you did not do anything to earn the retainer; if for no other reason there was not enough time to act. This is not a case where you represented the client and was not successful; nothing was done on their behalf, as it was apparently already too late when they requested your assistance.
