Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"Our 84 year old Mother is in the advanced stages of Alzhiemers and after 3 years of watching her health decline we have decided to put her in a care home. Her doctor recommended a place called the Gordon Manor in Redwood City. After we conducted an inspection we wanted to admit her into the home. We were told that there were two rooms available. On Jan. 15th a representative by the name of Portia Gaddi who called herself the "Administrator" came to our home for an "evaluation". She was very cold and distant. I asked if she had any questions and she had none. After a few minutes she left and said she would call me. On Jan 16th Portia Gaddi called to say that she "made the decision not to take my Mother". When I asked "why" she said that they could not operate a hoyer lift. I said if that was the deal breaker we would admit my Mother without the hoyer lift and that she could be lifted out of bed the same way they handle their other patients. SHe said she would get back to me. The next day Jan. 17th Portia Gaddi called to say they have decided not to take my Mother in the home.
I asked why and proceeded to say that she did not want to "overburden her staff". At that time I asked if she was telling me that they do not have the staff to handle someone in the Advanced stages of Alzhiemers. Her answer was "Yes we can handle patients in the advanced stages of Alzhiemers and who are bedridden. I asked then why are you not accepting my Mother. She escalated the case to a woman by the name of Alissa Tu who called herself one of the owners of the Gordon Manor.
On Jan. 19th I asked Alissa if she could explain why my Mother was not being accepted into the Gordon Manor. She listened to me and said she would have a meeting with her staff and she would get back to me.
After one week of not hearing back from Alissa Tu I called her and left a message. Two days later I had to call her again. On Jan. 30th she called me back and told me the reason why they couldn't take my Mother was because there were no rooms available.
At that point I became very frustrated and said I could'nt understand what was happening.
WIthin a matter of two weeks I still could not get an honest answer of why my Mother could not be accepted in the Gordon Manor.
First it was:
1) the "Hoyer lift" then it was
2) that "they did'nt want to overburden their staff" then it was
3) that there were "no rooms"
Today Jan. 3oth I was told by Alissa Tu that I did not know how to take "no" for an answer and that the answer was simply "no-no-no" then she hung up the phone.

The nature of this business requires people who are patient, caring understanding of the
dilemna in dealing with our aging loved ones. We were treated in a very unprofessional unethical cold and simply humiliating fashion.
I still do not know the reason that they refused to take my Mother in their home. This appears to be a matter of discrimination and I am in the process of investigating my rights. Also, I wish to prevent anyone else who is dealing with the task of taking care of their aging loved ones from being subjected to these type of individuals.
Do they have the right to discriminate in that fashion?

Additional Communication Between Claimant and Gordon Manor Hide
  • Jan 31, 2012, Claiming party added:
  • Our 84 year old Mother is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s. After 3 painful years of watching her health decline, her doctor (Charlotte Gonzales) recommended we place her in a boarding home called the Gordon Manor 1616 Gordon Street in Redwood City. The business states “Heartfelt Professional Care for the Elderly” and “Just like Family.” After my father and I conducted an inspection we agreed to admit my mother into the home. It was a very painful and emotional decision. We waited until after the Holidays and on Jan. 13 we contacted The Gordon Manor and were told that there were two rooms available. We told them that we would like to admit my mother. On Jan. 15th a representative by the name of Portia Gaddi who called herself the "Administrator" came to our home for an evaluation. She came into our home walked over to my mother and stared at her. I asked if she had any questions. She had no questions and she had no compassion, warmth or even polite conversation. She did not speak to my mother or ask any questions from us. There was no common courtesy in her manner. After a few minutes she left and said she would call me. The next morning she called me and very coldly said that they were not going to accept my mother at the Gordon Manor. Needless to say I was very upset and asked why?
The answers that where given over a two week period were:
Jan. 16-I spoke to Portia Gaddi she said the reason was the "Hoyer lift", then when I said we would admit my mother without the Hoyer lift. She said she would get back to me.
Jan. 17-I spoke to Portia Gaddi she said the reason was "they didn’t want to overburden their staff". I asked if their staff was unable to care for Alzheimer’s patients she said yes. I asked then why not my mother. She escalated the mater to Alissa Tu who said she was the “owner”.
Jan. 19 I spoke to Alisa Tu and asked her why my mother would not be accepted into the Gordon Manor. She said she “would get back to me”. I called Dr. Gonzales to inform her of the situation.
Jan. 30th – After several attempts of reaching Alisa Tu she returned my call and said the reason they could not take my mother was because there were "no rooms". (Note: That day (January 30) I was told by a representative at Gordon Manor that there was a shared room still available.) So I knew this was not true.
Jan. 30 – At that point I became very frustrated and at this time I was angry because I felt I was getting the “run around”. I said that I couldn’t understand what was happening and all I wanted to know was WHY they would not accept my mother in their care facility? At that time Alissa Tu said that I “did not know how to take "no" for an answer.”. She said that “I could not force them to take my mother” and her answer was simply "No!-No-No! That’s it!" Then she hung up the phone.
I was treated with insults and lies because I simply wanted to know the reason why my mother was not accepted at the Gordon Manor. My family was treated with lack of compassion, disrespect and in a very unprofessional, unethical, cold, humiliating fashion. Most importantly my mother was treated in a discriminatory fashion. It appears they do not want to “burden their staff” with the elderly who really need care and refuse to accept them in their care. However they are willing to accept those who are less burdensome and treat them “just like family”.
I wish to inform the community of my experience and am seeking professional help regarding the discriminatory actions that were taken against my family and most importantly towards my mother. The employees and owners at the Gordon Manor are unprofessional, unethical, and discriminatory. They add to the grief and suffering of those who are dealing with the pain of taking care of their aging loved ones.
It is important to ensure that the elderly people who are in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s (like my mother) will not continue to be discriminated against by people who are supposedly in the business of taking care of the elderly.
Allow me to be perfectly clear that I would never consider putting my Mother in this facility. They are hypocrites and only "appear" to care if you are an "acceptable" patient.

  • Allow me to be perfectly clear that I do not wish to put my Mother in the care of the people at the Gordon Manor. ALso, I wish to protect any other person who is seeking care for their helpless elderly loved ones from experiencing the abuse that I endured in trying to admit my mother into the facility. I do not wish for any settlement from Gordon Manor. I only want to prevent this unprofessional, unethical, abusive and discriminatory behavior from happening to anyone else.
