Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I called DISH network to ask how much an upgrade would cost. The girl said " $1.00" I said "Great". They sent a man out to do the upgrade. He installed a different DVR and a thing he called a 'Joey' and a new satellite dish. The next day, I got a call from DISH offering me a 'free' upgrade. I called them and told them about the call and the girl said she would take care of it. I thought she would take the $1.00 charge off. When I got my bill it close to $100.00 more than my usual bill. I called to ask them why the charges. The girl started telling me that one thing and another cost so much. I told her that I was told that this upgrade would be free. She said that only meant there would be no 'up front' cost. Nobody told me anything about the charges. My second bill was smaller but still much higher than usual. I had to agree (on the phone) to staying with DISH for 2 more years. One of the girls that sold me this 'free upgrade' talked me into buy something they called 'Silver protection' I know I was stupid to buy that. She said that was to keep from being charged for the technician coming out and installing the new equipment. I was also going to be charged for the guy who came out to install this 'free upgrade'. I called them this morning and told them to take the 'Silver protection' off. That will bring the bill down about $9.00. There is no way I can go back to my old things because they said the equipment I had was obsolete and it would just be put in the trash. I think all the calls were recorded and if they let anyone listen to them there will be nothing telling about any charges (except the $1.00). The only reason I didn't have all the channels I wanted was because I couldn't afford them. Now I'm being charged extra for an upgrade that really isn't as good as what I had and I still don't have any more channels. I called to try to get someone to fix the problems I'm having with the upgrade and a girl took over my T.V. and took a very long time trying to fix everything. I thought she had done it but after she hung up and I started watching regular T.V. the problems were still there. They told me that if I didn't stay with DISH for the whole 2 years I would be charged $10.00 a month for all the months left. As far as I'm concerned that's really rotten. I talked with another girl who said she would try to help me. She said she would take the 'Silver protection' off (which is something I did myself) and she could make a few charges less and could bring the bill down to $52.xx for 1 year then the bill would go back up to $62.00 and if I didn't stay with them for another extra year they would charge me $10.00 a month for all the months I didn't stay. That would've been committing myself to 3 years. I said "No thanks". That's when I called and had the 'Silver protection removed. I think I should be able to have the same bill I had before which was $57.78 a month without having to commit myself to years of staying with DISH. I think I've already been with them about 10 years, but they've never done anything this rotten before. I think I should also get over $100.00 refund because that's what I've paid for this 'Free Upgrade". But whether or not I get what I want, I think everyone should beware of DISH's ' free' upgrades."
