Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I am a bail enforcement agent for the State of Indiana. I work with law enforcement every day. I do investigations for a living. I was at the Best Western at 3830 179th st Hammond, In, on 8/20/10. The employees had seen me carrying my gear (i.e. shotgun, ballistic vest, etc.) in and out. On this occasion they saw me come in without my gear. I was in first row of parking in front of lobby door in clear view of the lobby and desk (i.e. security guard and desk clerk). I was in my room less than an hour. I came outside and found my truck had been broken into (window smashed) and a combat shotgun stolen. I find it interesting that any other time I came in the lobby, the guard was ALWAYS in the lobby or out front smoking. However, when this occurred, the guard says he was on my floor patrolling (i.e. being a lookout). I do believe this was an "inside" job. When I found the truck, the first question the guard asked me was, "Did you have a shotgun stolen?" How would he know what was stolen from my truck if he had no knowledge about the crime? The shotgun was on the floor under the backseat not visible unless someone pressed their face up against the window, which he could do w/o looking suspicious. The manager would not come when summoned by the authorities so they could view the security video. I expect the videotapes to be "cleansed" by Monday when the detectives arrive to investigate. After speaking with the police, I found out that the hotel has been having problems with prostitutes along the street and in the parking lot and was told to stay at the hotels further west where the Fairfield Inn and the Marriott are. They have actual off-duty police they use for security. Best Western is not concerned with the safety of their patrons or the patrons' belongings. Their non-action in response to this event has led me to believe their only concern is renting rooms, period. This hotel is NOT SAFE for guests or the vehicles in their parking lot. Their windows did not secure so I had to secure it myself (i.e. pin in the window track). This just goes to show you a seasoned investigator can be "taken" too. I will NEVER stay at a Best Western again, I don't care where it is."
