Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"AT&T provides my internet and home phone service. Although the FCC permits phone companies to block robocallers from calling phone company customers, AT&T has utterly failed to protect its customers. It is thus allowing its customers--including me-- to be victimized by scammers and scum. Heaven knows how many millions of dollars and how much personal info has been stolen from confused or elderly citizens (who are especially prone to allowing tech-support-type scammers to remotely enter their computers)--simply because of AT&T's failure to install robocall-blocking technology.

When I tried to reach someone at AT&T to discuss this problem, I was put on hold for an interminable length of time, passed around various numbers, and finally told that someone would call me back. No-one ever did.

Ironically, when I answered the phone to what I THOUGHT was AT&T, it turned out to be a robocalling scammer using a spoofed number.

Since I often work from home, my day is a joyous round of calls from:

a) Rachel from Cardholder Services. And her sisters. All of them.
b) "Windows Microsoft Engineers" and "Tech support refund" scammers
c) "I've fallen and I can't get up" personal alarm scammers
d) Security alarm service scammers
e) Crappy "charities" of the type that give "a minimum of 5 percent!!" of donations to programs, and which should in my opinion be hounded to the ends of hell, or to the IRS, whichever is worse
f) Political party scum peddling bogus surveys designed to freak people out about bogus issues; see (e) above.

I have absolutely zero interest in hearing from any of these people. I can hardly wait for election High Season to get into its stride. Do we have to rip our phones out and put their carcasses on Randall Stephenson's pillow in order to get some action here?

I try to follow the FTC's advice of never answering such calls because it just encourages the little ****ers, but spoofed numbers often mean that I THINK I'm answering a call from a legitimate business--like AT&T. Haha.

I am unutterably sick of this. I am paying for a service that I am afraid to use."

Additional Communication Between Claimant and At&T - Headquarters Hide
  • Feb 23, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • AT&T couldn't have been more responsive, particularly to a service issue mentioned in passing. I've had numerous calls, which I very much appreciate. However, the robocalling issue is still not resolved. I had read that one phone service allows customers to add a 'Press 1' option--when someone calls, they have to press 1 to actually get through, which would keep out the robocallers. Even better would be a kind of aural Captcha (what does D-O-G spell? or, how do you spell dog?). Unfortunately, AT&T doesn't have this option and doesn't seem to have heard of it, although they promised to look into it. I cannot close the claim, although I'd like to, simply out of surprise and pleasure at AT&T's commitment to trying to fix my problems. If anyone has any solutions...please add.
