I agree with JP below that the contract is important. If the installation was contingent on financing and the financing couldn't be obtained, then the buyers should get their money back from Aloha Solar/Advanced Energy Solutions.
It's not very impressive to see that Aloha Solar/Advanced Energy Solutions just rejected the claim without saying why. If there's a good reason for rejecting it then they should say so.
The solar industry is having a tough enough time without this kind of complaint about sales techniques.
I don't think this is the kind of thing that can be resolved by public suggestions. Based on your representation of events--and I presume you have something in writing to substantiate your claim--I would think you would easily get your money back. Good luck!
Was there a contract? If there's a contract and it says that the deposit will not be refunded if the buyer fails to obtain financing, then there's not a lot to be done about that. It's up to the business whether they want to suffer the damage to their reputation over $1,000. And the buyer would want to be more careful about believing sales spiel in the future.
If there ISN'T a contract, or there isn't a clause that enables the business to retain the deposit, then the deposit should be returned. Everyone in business is aware that sometimes you'll put in some effort and it won't be rewarded - you'll lose the sale. That's part of the cost of doing business.
