Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"Brought my motor to Richard Clarks Garage at 2557 Faucette Lane Burlington NC 27217 phone # 336 270 3866 on 1-22-21-2018 for a rebuild due to "Metalic" tapping in upper motor. Told about 3 weeks turn around. Took 16 weeks to get it back totally rebuilt like brand new. Paid $4,100 and my mechanic reinstalled motor and it had a lower end "Knock". Sent video to Richard Clark. Told my mechanic to remove motor after I was insured Richard Clark would fix motor and make it right. I was told he would pay for any charges encured for removal and installation of motor by my mechanic.
I now haul motor back to North Carolina 5 1/2 hrs one way and Richard Clark says "there's no way he created this "Knock" maybe we did something. B.S., we only installed his brand new rebuild and started it for 15 seconds and shut it off because of the loud knock !
Now after promissing it would be fixed I don't get any answers to texts or voice mails. After 6 weeks I finally get Richard on the phone and he says he has to fit it in his schedual. 7-18-2018 I am told to pick up motor it has been fixed. When I arrive to pick up motor I asked what was wrong with the motor and Richard Clark tells me "NOTHING". He now runs the motor out of the car on an engine stand at a very high RPM. It is so noisy that you can't hear anything but the roar of the exhaust. (lucky I videod it because the video picked up the knock) the video wasn't reviewed until a later date. At that point I put my trust in Richard Clark as he told me motor was O.K. with no knock. Now Richard has the nerve to demand $1,200 telling me there was nothing wrong with the motor and he's no going to pay my mechanics bill for removal and installation.
I refuse to pay, pack up my motor and leave. Now I get barraged by phone calls and texts. After my mechanic reinstalls motor with videos of every step the motor still knocks, same noise, same spot ! Nothing wrong.....we call B.S. ! ! ! My mechanic has maintained this car and has removed and installed this motor without a glitch at other times.
I have never run across such a dishonest shop in the 31 years I have owned this car. I have had 4 mechanics listen to this knock and they have determined it is a lower motor rod knock at the middle cylinder passenger side. This motor NEVER had a rod knock and this was caused by Richard Clark.
Now I've gotten nowhere after 8 months of unanswered questions, finger pointing, insults to my mechanic and insulting defamitory texts from Richard Clark and his employees to me personally. I now have a vehicle that is totaly undrivable, caused by a business owner who is dishonest, arogant, rude and has no regard what so ever for a customer. He still thinks we caused the knock and he is owed money when we received a totally sealed brand new rebuilt motor and all we did was install what he supposedly supplied us with.......a BRAND NEW MOTOR.
What I want at this point is my $4,100 refunded, $2,000 my mechanic was paid for the removal and instillation charges, $450 for gas for six 5 1/2 hour trips I made back and forth to RICHARD CLARKS GARAGE at 2557 Faucette Ln. Burlington N.C. 27217. The grand total of my claim is $6,550."

  • For a full explanation of the situation please see the attached file. It's important to note that we have made multiple attempts to contact Ron after he left without paying for his motor a second time. All of our numbers were blocked. We still would like the opportunity to satisfy the customer. He has rejected our offer to fix whatever may be wrong with the car. We offered to oversee the install and first start up in the car to which Ron also denied. This offer still stands.

  • Richard Clark: We still would like the opportunity to satisfy the customer. He has rejected our offer to fix whatever may be wrong with the car.

Ron: There is nothing wrong with the car, the motor is the problem. Do you think for one minute after all the 5 1/2 hr trips, hold ups and out and out lies about how you spent all your time looking for a noise you couldn't find I would bring my car to your shop again. All the B.S. about thoroughly looking through the entire new motor is just that B.S. ! All you told me was you checked bearing clearance on the two center rods, so the rest of your inspection is all made up B.S. ! I still have the same knock in the same spot which tells me your inspection story has been made up and is totally fictional. A TOTAL LIE !

Richard Clark: We got a phone call saying that the engine had been installed and that it had a "rod knock".

Ron: I told you the motor had a "Knock", not a Rod Knock. I am a laymen not a automotive technician, I wouldn't know a rod knock from a knock on your front door. ANOTHER R.C. LIE !

Richard Clark: When Ron came to get his motor I expressed my concern that he was not going to have us install the motor in his car.

Ron: I offered to bring the car up for motor installation and was told they don't have the manpower. ANOTHER LIE.
Richard doesn't have 4 employees as he stated, he only has himself and one other person who works there full time. ANOTHER LIE.

Richard Clark: He assured me that the person doing the work was a personal friend doing him a favor.

Ron: I paid my mechanic $2,000 to remove and install this motor. That motor has been in and out 4 times because of your "Defective Rebuild" . My mechanic is a qualified technician, I get no favors. ANOTHER LIE !

Richard Clark: At no time in 22 years have I ever completed an engine in less
    than two months.

Ron: You received my motor on 1-22-2018, you didn't start work on it until 3-27-2018, I was told it was finished with "ALL" new parts and to pick it up on 4-9-2018. That's 2 weeks to TOTALLY REBUILD this motor. I call you a LIER and consider this a "RUSH JOB" on my rebuild. I have copies of the timeline on texts from your shop. ANOTHER LIE !

Richard Clark: For extra measure we added an additional muffler in series with the first muffler for even less noise.

Ron: I have pictures of that motor with ONLY (1) muffler connected to that exhaust system. ANOTHER LIE !

Richard Clark: Then we started the engine and let him listen to it running. After a little warm-up I ran it at different speeds all the way from fast idle to about
5k RPM. Lots of rattle that is normal from the injectors and valve train
but no knock at all. Since I wanted him to be sure, I actually ran the
engine nearly an hour during which time he even recorded the running
with his phone. I asked him if he was ok with the way it sounded. He
said that he was ok with it.

Ron: Fast idle to you is 2,500 rpm? You only hear an engines exhaust noise at 2,500 rpm with motor out of a car. You only ran that engine for maybe 5 minutes because at that point all you were concerned about was going to lunch with your buddies and trying to fleece me out of more money. I never told you it sounded O.K. because it was so noisy out of car. The video I took does pick up the Knock. We looked at that after the motor was re-installed. ANOTHER LIE !

Richard Clark: While we had put nearly 2 days work into the motor I would only charge him for one day.

Ron: Who the hell is "WE"? You told me YOU and only YOU worked (1) day checking out only the two middle rod bearings and nothing else. You should have dismantled the whole "NEW" engine until you found the Knock YOU created. ANOTHER LIE !

Richard Clark: I told Ron that if he would bring the car to my shop that I would fix whatever was wrong with it. I told him that I was 99% sure that the problem was not internal to the engine.

Ron: The above statement is laughable. Are you a clairvoyant, do you have X-Ray vision? How can you honestly make a statement like that when you didn't dis-assemble the motor to totally inspect every "NEW" part you put in there !

Do you expect me to believe anything you say after you have consistently lied about every aspect of this engine rebuild from day one. Hell, you couldn't even remember who I was the first time I called about the progress on my motor. You didn't even know what my motor was there for or even where it was in your shop. The only thing that jogged your memory was when I told you I was the guy who took the whole shop out to lunch and paid for it. (so much for good will).

After all the B.S. I've been through dealing with you, myself, my car or my motor will never set foot in your shop again ! I have ZERO trust in you as a honest person and I've seen how you treat customers cars when they are left in your care. They are left outside in the elements to rot as you take months and months to ever get around to fixing them. Letting you care for my car is like abandoning it in a ghetto for months, isn't going to happen !

I am tired of your finger pointing, and all your lies and mystery that seem to run rampant at your shop. I don't give a damn about you past history with other customers, all I care about was an honest, top notch rebuild of my motor. That is not what I got and I am through with you and your RUDE non-caring, no customer satisfaction personality. You are not man enough to admit this rebuild and re-inspection was a defective motor which I hold you totally responsible. Therefore you will never touch my property and I demand a total refund of all moneys I spent receiving absolutely nothing from you but a motor you made worse than it was when I brought it to you !

I have filed (3) complaints on line so far and this is only the beginning. Next will be links of those complaints to all the web sites that us Buick owners troll on a daily basis. Send the $6,550 you caused me to spend for absolutely nothing and this all will be taken down off the internet. If not, we will continue to post on line for all to see ! ! !

  • Below is a copy of a text sent to my mechanic from Richard Clark. I am not a satisfied customer and after how I've been scammed by Richard Clark, if the money isn't that important to you, make this customer happy and return all the monies I spent over the last 8 months receiving a DEFECTIVE TOTAL BRAND NEW REBUILD !

Let's see if your really a man of your word Richard Clark !

  • Aug 22, 2018, Claiming party added:
  • Richard Clarks response to claim "We will fix whatever is wrong with the car."

    NO YOU WON"T ! ! !

First time I brought the motor to your shop you made it worse than it was and charged me for it. I paid you. I put my trust in you and you failed me.

Went to all the trouble of removing motor from the car and bringing it 5 1/2 hrs for you to investigate the noise you created.

Instead of immediately satisfying a paying customer and repairing the defective motor you chose to put my motor problem at the end of the line and get to it when you felt like it treating me like I was a pain in the azz. (so much for customer satisfaction).

After not being able to reach you via texts and voicemail for about a month, I finally get Richard on the phone. Now he acts like I've got some nerve bothering him about my motor. A few days later I get a text that motor is ready for pick up. (RUSH JOB)

Go to pick up motor 5 1/2 hrs, he runs it outside car at high rpm, very noisy in his shop and I can't hear nothing but exhaust noise. Richard then sits me down and try's to charge me $1,200 and says he found nothing. He explicitly told me he removed the center bearings (ONLY) and found nothing. He now clains he went internally into motor and inspected everything with a camera. (I call B.S.) He also admits that he never ran the motor to detect a knock which is what any ROOKIE would have done to find a knock. Any mechanic would have continued to dismantle entire BRAND NEW motor, that he assembled, until they found the problem. (not Richard). He did a quickie look at the easiest thing to look at, stopped and said he found nothing. Good thing my video picked up knock. (was reviewed after I got home)

5 1/2 hrs home, motor re-installed, SAME KNOCK, SAME EXACT SPOT, absolutely nothing repaired on defective motor. Richard continues to try and blame me and my mechanic with new stories he's come up with. He says maybe knock is not in motor, maybe it's one of the accessories bolted to motor. No Richard, maybe it's a mysterious knocking in 4 mechanics heads who looked at your BRAND NEW MOTOR.

Do you think for one moment I would trust you with my car or motor. After I've put up with you arrogant attitude, rude demeanor, broken promises, attempted overcharges and inadequate repair capabilities and the monies I have spent running around to your shop that your offer is invalid in my mind. (8) months for nothing.

After two (2) try's to fix what you created (KNOCK) I have zero confidence in your HONESTY, TRUSTWORTHINESS or CAPABILITIES to ever take anything you say as truth.

The only solution for customer satisfaction in this case is a total refund of all monies ($6,550) that I was caused to spend, by you, for absolutely NOTHING.
Send the money like a man (you stated the money needs nothing to you) and you will be done with this problem (YOU) created. If not, your in for a rough ride, BUCKEL UP ! ! !

They will be able to put themselves in my shoes and see how they'd feel if you ripped them off like you did to me ! ! ! Three times you had my engine and have done nothing for me but blame others for what you screwed up. Send me my $6,550 if the money doesn't matter to you, I am an unhappy customer who will not deal with a crook like Richard Clark. You said it yourself or is that just another of your many lies !

  • Aug 25, 2018, Claiming party added:
  • Just remembered what Richard Clark tried to pull when my BRAND NEW MOTOR was all rebuilt with new cam, new crank and all new bearings.

Richard Clark says in his attachment:
With less than five exceptions every engine that has ever left our shop since
1997 has been run on a test stand or dyno for anywhere from 30
minutes to an hour. This allows us to check for proper oil pressure,
cooling system functioning, leaks, unwanted noise etc.

    Rons response:
If Richard really cares so much about every motor he builds, why did he try to rush my BRAND NEW MOTOR back to me and tell "ME", "YOU break in the cam and the cam bearings". I insisted "NO" as this is part of his rebuild service and I insisted he break in the motor at his shop. He acted like I was a big pain in the azz for insisting he break in motor as I didn't want it to be our responsibility.

There is another example of his lack of customer care and completely RUSHING every aspect of this rebuild. He can tell you how wonderful he and his work is , but he is a liar and makes things up. I don't trust him at his word !

  • Aug 26, 2018, Claiming party added:
  • Richard Clark said: It's important to note that we have made multiple attempts to contact Ron after he left without paying for his motor a second time.

Ron says: I paid Richard in full for a "TOTALLY REBUILT MOTOR" the first time around and received a knocking defective motor. When I returned to pick up a repaired motor he told me he found nothing wrong with the motor and had done a minimal RUSH JOB inspection. Since my mechanic, myself and 4 other Certified Mechanics heard this very audible knock I knew he was trying to scam me out of more money when he didn't inspect every NEW part "HE" installed in that motor. I can smell a scam a mile away......and Richard, frankly you deserve absolutely NOTHING because this brand new motor still has the same exact knock in the same exact spot. So who are you going to point your finger at now, you get NOTHING for NOTHING.

I paid you in full for a brand new motor and you failed to return me a useable motor. Do you think, after screwing me twice I wouldn't trust you or your shop to tell the truth about what you find and fix it for free next time around. You won't ever get the opportunity to screw me again. Your a liar !

I demand ALL the monies I wasted ($6,550) dealing with a SCAMMER like Richard Clark. You built me a useless piece of crap motor and now you've devalued my beautiful car by 50%. Add that to your wonderful resume.

And you've got the nerve to think I owe you money, you got paid for doing nothing but ruining my motor the first time around, and you want more money......GET REAL RICHARD !

If a satisfied customer means more to you than the money, hey Richard I'm NOT a SATISFIED CUSTOMER so make me one and send back my money and this and other complaints will be deleted ! ! ! If not, you'll see what extent I will go to to get my money back. Balls in your court, be a man and pay up !

  • Aug 27, 2018, Claiming party added:
  • You have until this Friday August 31th to pay up or all complaints will be linked to Buick sites for all to see. I'm finished playing games with Richard Clark.

  • Your offer to fix whatever is wrong with the car is totally unacceptable ! You had 2 opportunities and you failed both times. Then you made up stories and tried to blame the customer for your negligence.

The only resolution is a CASH REFUND as you can't be trusted at your word. (found that out after paying full price for a TOTAL NEW MOTOR)

Ignoring this claim is only showing how you have absolutely no consideration for your customers satisfaction. Be a man, admit your human and pay up for what you've done to my motor, then I'll take it to someone I can trust.

Your reputation is at stake whether you care or not !

He installed a bad set of lifters and from other things I discovered they were probably my old ones as they did not appear on my bill.
I found that problem myself, I am a Rookie ! My mechanic installed a new set of lifters and that noise was gone.

Next scenario was a horrible noise that showed its head when I was just driving local, WHAM ! Shut this thing down and called a flat bed to tow it to my house. (This motor took over a year of B.S. and back and forth with this clown and has under 150 miles on it). In discussed this car sat on my lift for 3 months, I covered it and didn't even want to look at it.

I am not a mechanic but after listening to the noise coming from behind my timing cover I decided to take a look and this is what I found:
1- The cam button spring broke sending the button and spring into my gears and chain.
2- That broke my tensioner bolt off and the tensioner and tensioner spring took a ride on my gears and my "DOUBLE ROLLER CHAIN". **
** Doesn't the whole Turbo World know that you don't use a tensioner on a Double Roller Chain ! ! !
3- The chain was my old sloppy chain that this clown thought no one would ever discover, so he put a tensioner to quiet it down. **
** He was told to replace "ANY" worn out parts on the rebuild.
4- I had to replace.....Timing Chain and Gears, Cam Button and Spring, "NEW" Front Cover, (mine was galled and cracked), "NEW" Oil Pump, Cam Sensor Gear, and the Crank Sensor bracket was cracked because someone tightened it to much. Fortunately all these loose parts would up between the front main cap and the cover. I shut this thing down so fast that the oil was in good shape.

Used parts and shoddy workmanship seems to be his M.O.! And a Tensioner on a Double Roller Chain......SHAME ON YOU ! ! !
Maybe you thought you were pulling the wool over my eyes but I have photos, videos and all the bills for everything I had to buy to fix what "HE" SCREWED UP !

So......The Turbo Jesus couldn't find what he SCREWED up (or he didn't give a damn about customer satisfaction) only wanted more money. Well the ROOKIE FIXED ALL (at my additional expense) and now it finally runs perfect. My first time wrenching on this G.N. and I'm the original owner. Now who owes who money "TURBO JESUS" ! ! !

I would warn anyone thinking of using Richard Clarks Garage to run as far and fast as you can. BEWARE...SEE PHOTOS......

Richard Clark has turned his back on this situation and has screwed me and many others who have reached out to me about this deadbeat. Seems I'm not the only one he's ripped off.
