Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"Heartland Co-Op is installing a grain elevator that will produce a minimum estimate of 28.8 tons of gmo particulate matter per year. During Autumn season, when harvest is busy, it is estimated that 800 pounds per day will be in the air and I am concerned about my respiratory health. Also they may be producing chemical fertilizer at this site concerning additional impacts to environment, health and quality of life.
Also, the 25,000 semi-trucks converging on the location creates extra wear and tear on roads which are repaired at expense of the public.
The supervisors for the Heartland Project approved a 2.5 million dollar Debt via TIF & Bond included in the Jefferson County budget for 2014/15. The Nutmeg Avenue underpass is a one-lane gravel road not addressed in the budget. When this underpass becomes degraded the town plans to levy another 2.8 million dollars. This amounts a debt of 5 million dollars, which the town engineer admits is "not sustainable.”
A CEO and two very successful nearby grain farmers in the grain business for 30 years think the Heartland Project is not viable; Thus, the Bonds may fail and be left to taxpayers holding the debt.
Heartland is expected to employ six people; which will likely close several small granaries in other counties and that equals to job losses. Additionally, Overland Sheepskin plans to move if Heartland Opens a Grain elevator and this will result in 30 more job losses.”
