Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"At work a property I briefly managed received a negative Google Review directed at me. The review is made up of false accusations that are detrimental to my character and hurtful to my career with the company. When Google updated the review and changed the author's name from " A Google User" to an individuals name I realized the review was written by a co-worker's wife. Sadly this co-worker is in a leadership position. His name is Troy Braton, DTL in the Whitham district, Mike James Division.

The review states that I am horrible, lie to customers to get them to commit and yell at employees in front of customers. All of these accusations are false and were an attempt to sabotage my chances at an in-house promotion where my only competition was the co-worker who set the review into motion (he had his wife write the review).

While the review is malicious and discrediting I did not get any backlash from Extra Space, only potential customers who saw the review and decided to do business elsewhere.

This is not the first time I've seen co-workers rebel against me in this company. In fact I was recently terminated from my position when a customer from a sister store complained about me. His claim included details only an employee would know and they did not come from myself. This leaves to believe the customer was "trained" so to speak by the store manager who coincidently has worked very hard to show her bitterness toward me.

It is not uncommon for a store manager to establish an interpersonal relationship with a customer in this business. Often times a customer will visit the store and is one-on-one with a staff member. This can and does easily lead to a trusting relationship between the two. As store manager I may know a particular customer's husband has Cancer and this is something we will likely discuss each time the customer visits. Customer's who have this kind of connection with me are typically willing to do things for me. A customer once offered to call in a fake family emergency for me when she visited and realized I wasn't feeling well. Another customer once offered to call the national help line and complain about my assistant when he noticed me working while the assistant painted her nails. These are examples of what I think occurred here. I don't know of any other way the customer who complained about me would have obtained details only staff members are privy to.

I think the customer had an interpersonal relationship with the store manager at a sister site (8229) and that manager or her assistant gave him details he later used in the complaint that resulted in my termination.

Unfortunately, during the 10 minutes it took the District Manager to terminate me I was not permitted to comment or give a verbal explanation in my own defense. I was told "the decision has been made and the details are unimportant". I realize that legally they are not obligated to allow me this opportunity, but I have been a dedicated and hardworking employee for more than 5 years and had never strayed from the values that made me an ethical and successful employee.

To summarize, I'm a victim of the malicious actions of co-workers which eventually led to my termination. The employer did not do a thorough investigation into the customer's complaint, nor did he consider my 5 year long reputation of having a high level of integrity.
Integrity which he himself recognized and emphasized in a recent performance review.

I loved my job and showed it in everything I did at work every single day. I'm a single parent and this was my only source of viable income. While the company has every right to exercise the "At Will" termination policy, I am 100% confident I'd still have my career at Extra Space Storage if the situation were handled differently. Perhaps they could have addressed my multiple concerns with co-workers verbally attacking and otherwise taking aim at me, more aggressively. It is the company's job to protect employees. I reported the abuse multiple times and nothing substantial enough was done to make is cease. For these reasons I think legal action is necessary."

  • I've attached a copy of the Google Review still live on Google Maps as of 9/16/2014. I've attached proof the writer, Alison Brayton is affiliated with Troy Brayton, an Extra Space Employee.

  • Sep 16, 2014, Claiming party added:
  • I was informed today that the District Manager (DM) held a special conference call with the district's many employees on 9/12/2014 to announce my termination. This DM is known for humiliating staff by insinuating termination when announcing an employee is no longer with the company. I've witnessed this behavior when V. Carpenter and T. Reagan were terminated, also announced and used as an example during a company conference call.
