Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I am a contract hauler for the U.S. postal service my employer is Mark Clemons transportation he has the contract. My duties on a 4pm to midnight are to haul the mail from Seattle and make 2 deliveries, one to Bellingham main post office the other to Mt Baker station 3150 Orleans st Bellingham wa. The problem I am having is they are turning out all the lights on the dock and in the yard so the whole outside is blacked out. One night a few months ago I got there every thing was blacked out. I have a key to get in the yard, stumbled around in the dark, got it unloaded, was ready to leave and noticed someone standing at the end of the dock I yelled at this person and he ran into the yard could not see where he went so I called the police. They came with a dog and searched and found he had climbed thru a narrow gap in the security fence. Post office was notified that it was a security risk to black everything out. All was good for about a month and every once in a while they would do it again. When I went to the post office to ask them to please leave the lights on they said they would, but I think they thought it was kind of amusing. I am a veteran of the Military Police in the army. In the course of my service I was stabbed entering a house that had been broken into. I feel it is unsafe for me or anyone else to work under these conditions, not only the attraction for the criminal element to enter a blacked out area with no security lights, but operating heavy equipment in a blacked out area where you cannot see what you are doing."
