Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I am a credible business owner in Montana. I am also an author and, ironically, an occasional travel writer. I was on a business trip to Albany, Oregon. My partner and I stayed at Quality Inn. On March 10th at 11:30 pm my partner walked through the lobby and outside to smoke. Since I do not smoke, I took a short walk. Upon returning at 11:45 I asked the font desk for a wake up call before turning in for the night. At that time I was informed by a young gal at the desk that we were to vacate the premises immediately since the maid found a discarded cigarette pack containing a butt and ashes in our garbage can that morning.( My partner always discards the butt into an extra container she carries in her pocket so as not to litter outside or even possibly start a fire. She later tosses that into the trash.) The assumption was that wwe were smoking in the room. After the curt, shocking annoucement from the timid gal, the night manager came out and rudely confirmed that we were to leave the premises ASAP "or else." Without any ability to explain my partner and I then hurriedly packed up our belongings leaving behind a few things and possibly some cash which I haven't been able to find. Upon leaving we were fined $250. The charge was attached to my credit card. We were then forced to find other accomodations at 12:30 am, and we hadn't even set the clocks ahead an hour.
I am 66 years old and we had worked tediously at a fly fishing show for two full days. We were exhuasted. In all my life I have never been treated so poorly in a business setting. Apart from the humiliation the total and even inhumane disregard for our situation was outrageous, unconsionable, and highly offensive. At one point in my life I taught human relations and even worked in public relations for a small company. Now that I have my own business, customer relations is our most valued asset. I personally go beyond the call of duty to make sure our clients are treated with utmost respect and fairness. If that trust were to be ever breached, I would shut my doors. So to be treated so egregiously by obviously inept personnel was shocking and something very foreign to my moral and value system. It should go without saying that one would expect more from a business representing the hospitality industry. It would seem that today's youth(like the one's dealing with us) are so programmed by technology that their ability to relate to people with respect has been stunted.
I have contacted choicehotels.com custumer relations with little help or concern. The folks I have talked to gave me the standard corporate runaround. For the most part stays at motels, etc. go well, but there obviously seems to be little recourse for those of us treated unjustly. Quality Inn ought to be held accountable for the untold stress and inconvenience caused to me and my partner. Unless I get justice I know I will never stay at choicehotels again, and I do have the ability to influence others as well as other organizations to do the same."
