Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I was shocked by the way your staff mistreated me, they were unprofessional, unpleasant, and trying to make it harder for me. I came first time, met employee by the name of Kelly Ramsare who was having a bad day and she started yelling at me saying, that I have to take a Math Test; without understanding that I am coming, from another College and took Math before; then Miss Pattie came in the middle of the conversation then told me you can bring us a Math unofficial transcript and a High School Diploma, from your Country. I spoke with my College in Baltimore and asked them to send an official fax with my Math grades, next time I show up to school, your staff ask me to get them another transcript in a sealed envelope. After I brought my High School Diploma and they accept it, next time they saw me they told me that was not enough, we need you to translate it. I came to the ADMISSION Bringing my Florida Residency papers to an employee named Stephanie Lamie. She was nice in the beginning; once she opened my account , she started being unpleasant. I brought 2 Documents for Florida Residents as it states in the paper you gave me, for proof of Residency, she told me I don't follow this guide lines. Show me your ID, I told her I just have my Passport, she asked me to see it, I handed the Passport to her , she went to the copying machine to take a copy, I told her you can't take a copy without taking my permission, she answered that I have an accent and this Passport does not look real to her. I felt so discriminated and disrespected and mistreated by your staff because of color, race, or Gender. I saw on your computer screens that they wrote on my profile that I was angry, blah, blah.... this is very unprofessional that your employees write, their own opinion on (students/clients) to let the next employee give them hard time to waste students time and money. I will file a complaint with the Business Better Bureau, and may be will be taken further, if the Admission did not look at how their employees behave and write funny opinion about a student and discriminates him because of color,or race. Please help me because I don't know what papers I need to bring for the Admission because unfortunately the Admission department does not use any Protocols or Criteria."

  • It's always unfortunate to hear about staff and faculty being rude to students. I can empathize with the run around a school can give you when trying to transfer as I've done the same thing. The down side to transferring is that credits cannot always be accepted because their isn't an equal class at the school you're transferring to; you've mentioned you are from another country that can cause even more transferring problems. The transcripts need to be translated into English professionally so the school can evaluate it properly and put you where you need to be. They do this for your benefit also - they don't want you in a class that wouldn't be on your level of education. On another side, do you want to go to a school that treats you like this? I think it only tells how the rest of your time there will go. I'd suggest maybe trying to go somewhere where they are more than happy to help you out and give you every bit of information you need to help you move forward. Good luck with the rest of your education!

  • I am sorry to hear that you had that experience at the college. Going back to school is a big decision and it can be complicated if you earned your high school diploma in another country. I worked in higher education for several years and we have had many students who come to the US with high school diplomas from their native countries. In many cases the information needs to be in English or if it is not in English it needs to be translated or evaluated so it can be determined that the education you received is equivalent to a US high school diploma. Translation or evaluation are done by outside services that the school should have given to you. This is not without cost and the cost is often picked up by the student. My suggestion to you is to walk away from Palm Beach State College and choose another college that gives you a better experience. If you feel that there is any misunderstanding due to language barriers, I would also suggest that you bring someone who has your best interest at heart and whose native language is English. It seems there was some confusion as to the paperwork you needed but under no circumstance should you have been treated like that. It is their job to make sure you understand what you need and they should help you with that. Congratulations on your decision to further your education and good luck in finding a school that will be helpful to you during the entire journey.
