Claimant's opinion: I was not told there was a charge to make a dog throw it.
I am sorry you feel that way Mrs. Arwood. When you came for the puppy vaccines we informed you that puppy had been fed too much and the medical risks associated with over feeding. The puppy was in distress due to distended stomach, which would lead to "bloat". We informed you in the room that puppy was showing signs of distress and discomfort most likely due to stomach distention. The puppy wasn't yawning, the pup was attempting to burb and was unable to. Both, Doctor and Technician informed you of the situation. The technician asked for your permission to take pup back to the treatment room and induce vomiting, you agreed. I respectfully explained to you over the phone that you accepted financial responsibility for the $20 charge as soon as you gave us permission to induce vomiting; that was the reason why we asked for permission. I am sorry you feel the way you feel.
Wow. This is an outrageous complaint! This Dorothy Arwood not only doesn't have a clue how to care for a dog, she doesn't seem to want to know. While I was interning with a vet before graduation I saw GVD and I never want to see it again.
Maybe this summary in plain English from a pet site will help her understand what the vet helped her with and stop her silly demands for $290 over a reasonable $20 charge.
"Eating too much can lead to food bloat, or even a life-threatening condition called gastric dilation-volvulus. GDV essentially means your puppy has eaten himself sick and is in danger of suffering from a twisted stomach. His little belly may look extremely distended, he may retch unsuccessfully and salivate excessively. Call your veterinarian if you notice these symptoms for immediate treatment. Your puppy's life could depend on it."
Ms. Arwood's responses to the suggestion below, and her failure to respond to the vet's prompt and professional explanation, indicates that she is not acting in good faith.
While there may have been a genuine misunderstanding about the fee to relieve the distress the puppy was in due to over-feeding, no-one acting in good faith would demand nearly $300 in goods and services as recompense for a $20 misunderstanding - over the welfare of a beloved pet, no less. If I were a vet, I would not want such a person as a client.
Asking for $289.99 in recompense for an unanticipated $20 charge seems a bit much.
When I go to my doctor for my flu shot (which I did) and he mentions that he'd like to biopsy a mole (which he did) it wouldn't cross my mind that he wouldn't charge me for the extra service provided - which he did, and I willingly paid it, even though I wasn't expecting to spend that much when I went in.
Every separate service that is provided takes professional time, possibly uses materials, and therefore costs money.
Overfeeding a puppy is not a trivial issue and the claimant should be glad that the vet could alert her to the dangers, as well as relieving the pressure on the poor little dog's stomach. It seems to me that the claimant is probably just inexperienced with raising a healthy dog. It's also true that the vet might want to think about ensuring that pet owners understand properly that there will be a charge for each service - although what would he or she do if the owner refused? Would it be ethical to leave the dog in that state? Tough one. If it were a kid, you'd call social services.
Overall, my opinion is that the claimant found a decent vet and should understand that. But the vet might consider bending a bit too - maybe by giving the claimant a little package of the kind of goodies that would help her to raise a healthy dog - samples of pet food, book on training, whatever. Would that settle the problem?
