"I had an oil change done at the service center in June and in August the oil filter fell off mid driving. The engine is now ruined. Contact with the company, insists that they are not responsible for the problem since so much time had passed since the date of the oil change and the time it fell off. I find it hard to believe since the filter fell off while driving? I would like some sort of restitution for my complete loss of a vehicle."

  • Your information is incorrect. The oil filter fell off while the viehicle was being driven from home to Sonic where it's end destination was at that time. The roadway shows exactly where the filter fell off, approximately 500ft from where it had been parked. The new oil was because I put some in before attempting to start the car. When looking under the car noted that there was oil on the pavement so felt it better to add oil before starting the car. This was where the car did not start. Recently I went out to the road where the oil stain started and found an oil filter off to the side of the curb..believe that this was the filter that was supposed to be on the car. I still believe that the Sturtevant Farm and Fleet is at fault.

The claimant's settlement terms were rejected with the following explanation:

    "This customer brought her vehicle into our service center on June 7, 2012 for an oil change. On August 7, 2012 the vehicle was at the Sonic Drive-In on Howell Avenue with a massive oil leak. The problem was not reported to us until September 14, 2012.

    Upon inspection there was a “new” oil pan drain plug on the vehicle. The oil droplet on the drain plug as well as the oil droplets on the crossmember and undercarriage appeared to be clean which is not what would be evident from almost 3,000 miles of driving with a loose or missing oil filter. It was as if the oil had recently been changed.

    It is our insurance adjusters opinion that the condition of the vehicle is not indicative of a loose oil filter from an oil change that occurred two months prior to the incident. It is also unlikely that the oil filter would fall off on its own after almost 3000 miles. It’s most likely that the oil had since been changed elsewhere since June 7, 2012.
