Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I have purchsed two Dobermans from family Dobes and I have had to put first one down due to Wobblers and I now have a the 2nd one with Wobblers and other isues. I have spent over ten grand. I have ask for my money back and Steve Parson (onwer) refuses as he claims it's every thng else but his breeding. Although the mother Of the first dog died (heart attack) due to agility and breeding twice within a year she lost all the puppies. It's inhuman."

  • I beg to differ in your personal apinion. As you are a speacialist in case's like this. I have full prove of first puppy from a certified (specialist) as in your Neurologist. I also have documentation for 2nd puppy from a certified Neurologitst. I do have phone calls from you and e-mails telling me that an MRI is not what is needed to diognos Wobblers at which case we did X-RAYS as YOU (STEVE PARSON) requested. Whats most important here is the puppies and there health which brings us back to breeder. The puppy has issue's with her left leg has been in and out of Vets.I should not have to spend 10,000 on two dogs that breeder claims are healthy. My point is if you had any regards to the animals we would not be in this situation. You attach the your Vets opinion on the Xrays that is before you gave your personal opinion to Vets. Case being I have followed my part with both puppies and have spent beyond the amount needed to keep our puppies. They both were seen certified Neurologist AND diognost. As a breeder I would sugguest you stand behind your word and realize the depth of the hardship you have caused for animals and our family.. I have had three dobermans prior to yours and all trained fed the same way in the same City lets be realistic and stop the bad breeding.

  • I disagree with the explanation / grounds provided

"This is not a factual representation of the situation or our efforts to resolve it. I have written documentation from both incidents, as well as the contract and medical opinions from the leading Specialists in the field. The first dog was replaced no questions asked even though the client had not followed the terms of the contract, the second puppy became suspicious when the symptoms were exactly the same as he first. All vets agree in writing this is not a case of "CVI" or Doberman wobblers. Two suspect both dogs were caused injury with choke collars in training that resulted in these conditions. Below are the conditions of the contract that have not been met by the client.
The Claimant in this case also failed to disclose there is a third puppy that was sent to her daughters boyfriend that has not been in her care and does not display any of these symptoms.
Health Policy as follows: Family Dobes guarantees the pup to be free of Hip Dysplasia (when raised on approved feed, requires bar codes or weight circles for verification), hypothyroidism, von Willebrands disease (must be verified with Vetgen DNA test, and be “affected” and have active bleeding issues), wobblers syndrome, and progressive retinal atrophy to the age of 24 months. We also guarantee the dog to be free of genetic cardio problems when diagnosed by certified cardiologists. We recommend yearly holter monitor exams, EKG, Echo and blood tests. Cardio problems will be covered until four years of age if cardio testing has been conducted yearly from age one onward. Other diseases are not considered genetically inherited and will not be covered.

The first Puppy was not seen by a qualified Vet and diagnosis was not made. Client did not meet contract obligations but a replacement puppy was sent anyway. Here are the Vet Opinions of the specialists in regard to this current case. One a Doberman Judge, breeder and veterinarian, One a board certified surgeon and specialist in neurological conditions and one the leading canine neurologist, professor, and Vet.
Also the puppy did respond to steroid and antibiotic treatment which indicates this was inflammation and infection.
There is definitely a problem at cervical vertebrae 6 and 7. C6 has spondylosis deformans which is bone growth attempting to grow across the intervertebral space to stabilize the vertebrae. C7 is or has become deformed either as a congenital hemivertebra , trauma, infectious spondylitis, and neoplasia(tumor). Personally, I would say the most likely of the 4 is trauma or hemivertebra since there is so much boney structure deformity to C7. This image would be very atypical of cervical spondylopathy and the early onset is also atypical for spondylopathy in Dobermans. A consult with a neurologist and MRI would be the next diagnostic step to see if there are any salvage procedures for this dog. This could be done at Tufts University College of Veterinary Medicine I'm sure.
You have to seriously wonder about 2 dogs the same age with cervical spinal issues. The xrays show so much destruction that I personally think that it looks most like trauma. I'd inquire about how they have been training especially with overly strong neck/choke chain corrections. The other question is if they have a dominant dog jumping the puppies.

Do I understand correctly that the dog was only 5 months old at the time the radiographs were taken? What are the dog's clinical symptoms? Has any lab work (blood and urine) been done on the dog?

The radiographs show C6-7 ventral spondylosis and possible C7 cranial vertebral body end plate erosion suggestive of discosponydlitis or trauma causing damage to the end plate growth plate. Doberman "wobbler disease" (I hate that term) is a disc disease related problem of older dogs. The "wobbler disease" of young dogs (most frequently diagnosed in Great Danes) is a malformation/malarticulation problem. That can certainly happen in Dobermans, but these radiographs suggest a more active problem going on.

I would highly recommend an examination by a boarded neurologist. MRI will most likely be necessary to make a definite diagnosis. Blood and urine cultures would be indicated if discospondylitis.

The only boarded neurologist I know of in New Hampshire is Ken Schunk in Amherst. I would strongly suggest the dog be examined by him, or possibly go over to Ithaca, NY to Cornell where there are two neurologists on faculty. I would not recommend a refund until they have a diagnosis, especially since you have already replaced one dog without a proper workup or pathology being done on it to make a diagnosis.
