"A cyborg telemarketer (http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/12/almost-human-the-surreal-cyborg-future-of-telemarketing/282537/) called me to hit me up for a 'donation' to this company.

Now, it IS fun to play Confuse-the-Cyborg--although it's distressingly easy once you realize that you're not exactly talking to a real person--but what really alarms me is that only 5 percent of my 'donation,' according to the rep, would go to programs. The rest would go to the telemarketing company.

I find this unacceptable and unethical. While many savvy consumers are pulling up non-profit reports online even while we're getting the Pink Ribbon buzzword pitch, a lot of elderly, innocent, or otherwise vulnerable people actually write checks without knowing how to ask the right questions. Our tax code and Do Not Call laws enable this. Cyborg telemarketing maximizes the profits.

I am calling on Breast Cancer Financial Assistance Fund to use at least 70 percent of all donations for real programs, with complete transparency, and to verify its non-profit status which has been questioned by online commenters."
