Kim G. says: The initial claim was for a water heater that broke and ruined the wood floor in my kitchen and into the dining room. I had two bids for removing the wood floor and replacing the entire wood floor for not only the kitchen but the dining room, living room and hallway since any "new" product would not match. Unfortunately, the adjuster that came out did NOT take that into account when he put together his assessment. There were two different wood and laminate products on the floor to begin with. There was no way this floor could be sanded and stained. The amount he put down was less than $8,000. The actual work done by the contractor was just under $12,000 and did NOT include baseboard replacement and installation. Easily another $2500.
This happened on Thanksgiving Day 2019. The work was scheduled to be done but before that could happen we had another claim for the roof after a massive storm came through and damaged the roof and leaked in through and above the main picture window. Also had numerous leaks from various vents etc that the water came through.
So before the floor could be fixed the roof had to be fixed. The same adjuster Madison Mutual used came out to review the roof. This adjuster refused to acknowledge that the roof sustained damages consistent with two contractors that reviewed and bid. One bid was for $33,000 and another was $19,000. Initially the adjuster asked me how old the roof was, and I said I owned the house for five years and had no idea. He then said "well how old is the house"? I told him 1996 and he took that as the age of the roof. It wasn't until the second contractor came out that I found out that not only was the roof not that old but that the roof actually sustained damage to the living room and that part of the roof was a single layer of shingles but the rest of the roof had been "roofed over" the old shingles! How did this adjuster NOT seen this? How did this adjuster NOT see that the floors were different materials and could NOT be fixed in a manner he bid?
It didn't seem to matter to Madison Mutual's claims adjuster Mr. Paulsen. I contacted him repeatedly get this handled and in a more timely manner. The floor was finally fixed last month, June 2021. The original damage occurred in November 2019. The roof was replaced at MY EXPENSE since Madison Mutual did not offer any coverage to replace or repair the roof. Instead claiming I was somehow the problem since several vents had leaked?
The roof was $19,000 and the floor replacement was $11,800. The drywall contractor was $3200. I received a very low ball offer to fix all the damages from Madison Mutual and in fact was BEFORE the pandemic and the subsequent inflationary pricing to not only materials but labor as well. The adjuster thought we could find people for $16 to come and refinish and replace woodwork and do painting! There isn't anyone working for less than $25 even in Menomonie WI. And materials have tripled in some cases.
I was told that the higher costs to repaid would be taken into account when they received the bills from the contractors that finished the work. That was NOT the case, I have a check in the amount of $3000 and added to the original bid from their adjuster I am short over $8,000 for the floor, all $19,000 for the roof and $5000 for the damage from rain and wind damages to the interior.
I would NOT recommend this company or the company they used to inspect and put together their offer to me. Both were either just plain incompetent, not willing to be honest about the damages that were clearly present of perhaps the fact I'm 71 years old just a case of age discrimination? It really doesn't matter I feel they screwed me over from the start. And the stories you hear about companies that do nothing but give insurance companies a list to answer claims in their favor seems to be the case here. Not happy at all. I'm not sure how many folks over 65 that have insurance with this company, but I would guess age discrimination is something many of us are aware of and would NOT buy from those that practice that.
