Claimant says: "The Director, Rachel Mairose, did not disclose full history of 6 month old, femaile, Shar Pei named Star (that I renamed Gracie) that needed a home. She lied about the dog being Dog friendly, Child friendly, crate trained, and health issues in order to get paid to have me adopt her. She had a severe case of mange that was evident, even if a person was blind he/she could tell, and neglected to tell me and it went 5 weeks untreated until I took her to my vet to get her checked out to see what it was. I then got an injection for mange every 2 weeks for a total of 4 injections before her coat finally filled in and the mange was gone. She told me that this puppy couldn't be in a home w/children, which I don't have any, however; would not disclose why (due to her aggression) and in the adoption paperwork it states all of these which were NOT true: dog friendly, child friendly, crate trained were all marked yes. Health issues was marked no. This is also a lie as she had mange. She knew that I had a male, Shar Pei, Gunner, and knew Gracie was aggressive toward dogs and placed her in my home. Gunner has countless scars from Gracie attacking him and had stitches under left eye and almost lost his eye. This is not a behavior problem; it was in her genes. I had her for 5 months and loved her, cared for her and gave her a wonderful home. After this last attack and the stitches that Gunner had to have; I had no choice but to put Gracie to sleep at 11 months old because Rachel wouldn't take her back. NONE of this should ever have happend had Rachel been truthful. Her rescue should have euthanized her knowing that she was this aggressive. She had wonderful qualities, a kisser and a cuddler, loved chewing nylabones and stuffed toys, playing tug of war, going for walks; however, when she went into attack mode; there was no warning. She was always the instigator and often times for no reason such as food, bones etc. I have vet bills that should never have occurred due to her neglect in informing me of the truth. I left several voicemails with no return call even though a volunteer promised me she would return a call. I sent several emails and all of them were initiated by me. After the adoption, there was not one follow up email sent to me by Secondhand Hounds. I would update her and when she heard Gracie had mange; she claimed she thought it was already taken care of. She had huge circles throughout her body with no hair; obviously it wasn't taken care of. She finally emailed me a few days after the last attacke after several emails and phone calls and claimed that it is my fault I have to put Gracie to sleep as I won't work with a trainer. This isn't a training issue and she knew how Gracie was before placing her up for adoption. I will never go to a rescue to get a dog in the future. I would highly suggest that if someone wants a dog; find another rescue or shelter to go through. Rachel will turn it around on you and make it your fault when it is clearly no fault of yours; strictly the fault of Rachel and Secondhand Hounds. Please do not use this organization; if you can call it that. I have been in tears for two days and am grieving as I loved Gracie so very much. This is horrible heartbreak for anyone to go through and my last email, again, got no response whatsoever. That shows you how this operation is run; neglectfully and with no regard for the future of dogs they place for adoption. They just want that adoption fee and out the door; now the dog is your problem. Even though one of the stipulations upon adoption says at any point if I cannot keep the animal (as I couldn't due to Gunner being in stitches and needing to heal, not to mention if it were worse and I lost him too) that I will return her to Secondhand Hounds. That is yet another LIE...Rachel would not take her back. I could go on for quite some time. I have all the adoption papers and emails to prove my complaint as well as over $1,000 in vet bills, not to mention the adoption fee of $300. DO NOT adopt through Secondhand Hounds or believe anything that Rachel Mairose is telling you.*” ...Show less »
