Claimant says: "Our 84 year old Mother is in the advanced stages of Alzhiemers and after 3 years of watching her health decline we have decided to put her in a care home. Her doctor recommended a place called the Gordon Manor in Redwood City. After we conducted an inspection we wanted to admit her into the home. We were told that there were two rooms available. On Jan. 15th a representative by the name of Portia Gaddi who called herself the Administrator came to our home for an evaluation. She was very cold and distant. I asked if she had any questions and she had none. After a few minutes she left and said she would call me. On Jan 16th Portia Gaddi called to say that she made the decision not to take my Mother. When I asked why she said that they could not operate a hoyer lift. I said if that was the deal breaker we would admit my Mother without the hoyer lift and that she could be lifted out of bed the same way they handle their other patients. SHe said she would get back to me. The next day Jan. 17th Portia Gaddi called to say they have decided not to take my Mother in the home.
I asked why and proceeded to say that she did not want to overburden her staff. At that time I asked if she was telling me that they do not have the staff to handle someone in the Advanced stages of Alzhiemers. Her answer was Yes we can handle patients in the advanced stages of Alzhiemers and who are bedridden. I asked then why are you not accepting my Mother. She escalated the case to a woman by the name of Alissa Tu who called herself one of the owners of the Gordon Manor.
On Jan. 19th I asked Alissa if she could explain why my Mother was not being accepted into the Gordon Manor. She listened to me and said she would have a meeting with her staff and she would get back to me.
After one week of not hearing back from Alissa Tu I called her and left a message. Two days later I had to call her again. On Jan. 30th she called me back and told me the reason why they couldn't take my Mother was because there were no rooms available.
At that point I became very frustrated and said I could'nt understand what was happening.
WIthin a matter of two weeks I still could not get an honest answer of why my Mother could not be accepted in the Gordon Manor.
First it was:
1) the Hoyer lift then it was
2) that they did'nt want to overburden their staff then it was
3) that there were no rooms
Today Jan. 3oth I was told by Alissa Tu that I did not know how to take no for an answer and that the answer was simply no-no-no then she hung up the phone.
The nature of this business requires people who are patient, caring understanding of the
dilemna in dealing with our aging loved ones. We were treated in a very unprofessional unethical cold and simply humiliating fashion.
I still do not know the reason that they refused to take my Mother in their home. This appears to be a matter of discrimination and I am in the process of investigating my rights. Also, I wish to prevent anyone else who is dealing with the task of taking care of their aging loved ones from being subjected to these type of individuals.
Do they have the right to discriminate in that fashion?
