Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
""PEPSI" was my PTSD/Therapy dog. She was my son's rescue, and shortly thereafter, he died. Dr. Barns had been her Vet. for over three yrs. and at 16 she was doing very well (according to him). She had some arthritis in her back legs and put her on "Deramaxx" a very strong anti-inflammatory drug along with "Gabapentin", for pain. He neglected to discuss with me, any side effects to watch for. Feb. 23, 2015, he did blood work and told me her kidney and liver enzyme levels were elevated, "but not to a danger level" and continued to prescribe the "Deramaxx" He did not monitor her or do any more blood work for ten months. Dec. 23, 2015, he finally decided to do blood work after I called and told him that she was acting strange...ie: excessive drinking, lack of appetite, head pressing, confusion and other things that were out of the norm. The very next day Dec. 24th 2015.....7am...he called to tell me that she was in liver failure and I should prepare for euthanasia as she probably won't last out the month.

I immediately took her to a Vet ( Dr. Slomowitz), a referral from a friend, and she without any hesitation put Pepsi on an Rx diet (2) and 2 different liver and kidney supplements. After 6 weeks, she showed a slight improvement in her kidney level, but not the liver. She then did an ultra-sound and found a mass on her left abdominal area (which I had pointed out to Dr. Barns) and he sloughed it off saying he didn't think it was anything to worry about. The Tech. that did the ultra-sound could not be sure if it was malignant or benign without a biopsy, which at her age was pretty much out of the question....I had done some extensive research when she was having this abnormal behavior and ever, clearly stated how dangerous this stuff could be and that monitoring her a support diet was essential.....His apathetic attitude and outright egregious behavior is beyond comprehensible to me .. she lasted until March 31, 2016.

He knew what she meant to me...she was the reason I was able to get out of bed in the morning (my son and I were ridiculously close)....I was diagnosed with PTSD and have under a Dr's. care since he died. Since she was my therapy dog, she went everywhere with me, we were never apart. I believe his disgusting display of sheer negligence killed her. He is an old man who should have retired years ago. I filed a complaint with the Veterinary Board an they believe that there is significant evidence to investigate him. I filed the complaint in April 2016.

Thank you for your time and consideration....any further questions, please don't hesitate to call or email. (805) 624-7909.

Warmly,
Sheryl Christopherson"

Additional Communication Between Claimant and Ronald Barns Hide
  • Jul 27, 2016, Claiming party added:
  • I have retained a veterinary attorney, as I don't see any progression on the part of Ronald Barns to step up and take responsibility for his negligence resulting in the death of my PTSD / therapy dog. His total apathetic attitude and egregious behavior makes him unfit to continue to practice...he is too old and complacent and needs to retire before he hurts or kills another animal.

  • What was the Veterinary Board's conclusion? I am very sorry for the loss of your dog. 16 years old is old for most dogs however - did they feel that the vet's negligence about side effects contributed to your dog's death?
