They'd have to sell the returned item as refurbished. If their receipt listed the return policy and it was inconsistent with what the store clerk told them, they- the customer bears some responsibility- otherwise dishonest customers could game the system by saying the clerk told them something different from the stated policy just to get their way. I'm not implying thats what happened here, but merchants need some protection too from he said/she said stuff. I think this would be a very fair solution and the customer would get what they want while the store would make a sale-albeit less profitably than if they didn't have to restock the returned machine. They'd also keep a more satisfied customer- which over time is worth more than anything.
