Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I was given false information by the sales rep. I was told that 2 large plants could be moved. I was told to leave all clothing and belongings in drawers. When the driver arrived he told me he could not move any plants (just 3 miles away). He also got an attitude that the reps know not to tell customers to leave items in drawers. When all was moved to my new location, I was told the quote went over because of "extra time". Upon removing the shrink wrap from my items, I realized that every drawer had been emptied by the movers...dresser, nightstands, entertainment center, vanity. I found one unlabeled box that evening. In the box was clothing mixed with breakable items, keepsakes, pictures and cards my children had handmade in kindergarten, photos of deceased family members. Absolutely no care was taken in packing my things and no one told me they were emptying the drawers. When I voiced my dissatisfaction to Allied, I was told this " did not take long" and they did me a favor by doing this for me. It took longer because I was "not ready". (Maybe because I was given improper instructions) They had taken my entire bedroom and THROWN my personal items in any box they would fit in without any regard to what it was and without labeling any boxes. When I asked about the time it has taken me to find the boxes and sort everything back out, I was told I would have to unpack anyway. I would not have thrown my entire bedroom into random boxes. I am still looking for much of it. I was not told that everything had to be in a covered box that was sealed, so they repacked many of my belongings. I am sure this accounts for "extra time." The driver had an attitude from the start. He emptied small drawers that did not add any "weight" to the furniture.
A separate crew unloaded me at my new location the day after. I was told the only reason they took a lunch break was that "for my safety" they went to Lowe's to buy bolts to put my bed back together because there were 4 missing. I was not told there were any bolts missing or I could have produced the ones I vacuumed up from my previous bedroom.
In addition, they completely took apart my roll top desk. The next day, among the boxes, I found 3 pieces to the desk. The pieces cannot be put back on unless the desk is taken back apart.
They have no customer service and kept making it sound like they were going out of their way to help ME. They require a credit card number prior to the move, so they charged me an additional $450 for the extra 2 hours. I am going to dispute the charge and do everythin in my power not to pay more than my quote. DO NOT USE BERGER ALLIED!!!"

Additional Communication Between Claimant and Berger Allied Van Lines Hide
  • Oct 09, 2014, Claiming party added:
  • Though Allied says they have issued a $200 refund, I have not seen that refund on my debit card yet. Why is it that a charge shows immediately, but a credit takes weeks? A $200 credit is nothing since I was overcharged by at least that much. The driver claims they were at my home until 7pm and charged me for a 10 hour day. This is impossible because I was at the walkthrough for my new home at 7pm that night. The bookeeper even confirmed that day that it took longer than expected (8 hours rather than the expected 6). In addition, I don't believe I have opened one box with fragile items in it that has not had at least one thing broken. Thirdly, three weeks later, I still have not found some of the contents of my bedroom. This is because they packed my bedroom without my knowledge and without giving me the option of packing it in some sort of logical way. There was nothing in any of the literature or instructions I was given that says all the dresser drawers should be free of their contents, so saying I was
" not ready" is an unfair statement. This claim is not settled as far as I am concerned.

  • Lynn, we are not the credit card company and have no control over how quickly a card goes through or how quickly a card takes to reimburse said person. By now I am sure you recieved your credit, if you have not, please call our office.
Your quote was non binding. Meaning actuals apply. We presented and provided you with all the material necessary for you to have a successful move. But if a customer is not prepared as was stipulated, yes, I am afraid the move may take longer.

Message from Berger Allied Van Lines: We have provided Ms. Reeves with a credit for $200.00. We feel this is a fair amount. Ms. Reeves was not prepared. She did not have everything packed properly nor was everything empty, as she mentioned (aside from the dressers). Our drivers are independent contractors and have a right of refusal on anything they are assigned to load. Although the sales person provided correct information to the shipper, it is still the drivers right to refuse what he feels could leave bugs in his truck. Our failure was to communicate this to the driver ahead of time. Ms. Reeves was provided with a NON BINDING estimate. Ms. Reeves was provided with her Rights and Responsibilities when you move within NC. Ms. Reeves was provided with and gone over, moving materials, to help her prepare for her move. Because items were not packed properly it took extra time to complete her move. We also did not charge anything for our materials for which we utilized to pack. We in no way mislead Ms. Reeves on purpose, or into a false sense of what can or couldnt be handled. That has been addressed with our entire team, here at Berger. If attitude was given, we do apologize for that, as that should never be something a driver should give any customer and it is not something we train or expect from our drivers. So we do apologize for any team members who may have shown anything less then respect and good judgement.

Ms. reeves credit card was given a $200 credit and that should process any where in two to three weeks. That will depend on her billing cycle and her credit card company properly processing that credit.

If Ms. Reeves has any other questions she can reach out to me personally, at 704-916-6477.

Thank you,

Michael Zlotnik
General Manager
